My enemies surround me like a herd of bulls; fierce bulls of Bashan have hemmed me in!

What sorrow awaits you who lounge in luxury in Jerusalem, and you who feel secure in Samaria! You are famous and popular in Israel, and people go to you for help.

You trample the poor, stealing their grain through taxes and unfair rent. Therefore, though you build beautiful stone houses, you will never live in them. Though you plant lush vineyards, you will never drink wine from them.

Eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of princes as though they were rams, lambs, goats, and bulls— all fattened animals from Bashan!

What sorrow awaits you who lie awake at night, thinking up evil plans. You rise at dawn and hurry to carry them out, simply because you have the power to do so.When you want a piece of land, you find a way to seize it. When you want someone’s house, you take it by fraud and violence. You cheat a man of his property, stealing his family’s inheritance.But this is what the Lord says:“ I will reward your evil with evil; you won’t be able to pull your neck out of the noose. You will no longer walk around proudly, for it will be a terrible time.”

Look here, you rich people: Weep and groan with anguish because of all the terrible troubles ahead of you.Your wealth is rotting away, and your fine clothes are moth eaten rags.Your gold and silver are corroded. The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh like fire. This corroded treasure you have hoarded will testify against you on the day of judgment.For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The cries of those who harvest your fields have reached the ears of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.You have spent your years on earth in luxury, satisfying your every desire. You have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter.You have condemned and killed innocent people, who do not resist you.

“ At that time I will put you on trial. I am eager to witness against all sorcerers and adulterers and liars. I will speak against those who cheat employees of their wages, who oppress widows and orphans, or who deprive the foreigners living among you of justice, for these people do not fear me,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

For they oppressed the poor and left them destitute. They foreclosed on their homes.

Do not oppress widows, orphans, foreigners, and the poor. And do not scheme against each other.“ Your ancestors refused to listen to this message. They stubbornly turned away and put their fingers in their ears to keep from hearing.

He fed them yogurt from the herd and milk from the flock, together with the fat of lambs. He gave them choice rams from Bashan, and goats, together with the choicest wheat. You drank the finest wine, made from the juice of grapes.“ But Israel soon became fat and unruly; the people grew heavy, plump, and stuffed! The Lord replies,“ I have seen violence done to the helpless, and I have heard the groans of the poor. Now I will rise up to rescue them, as they have longed for me to do.”

Then Omri bought the hill now known as Samaria from its owner, Shemer, for 150 pounds of silver. He built a city on it and called the city Samaria in honor of Shemer.

Do not be mean spirited and refuse someone a loan because the year for canceling debts is close at hand. If you refuse to make the loan and the needy person cries out to the Lord, you will be considered guilty of sin.Give generously to the poor, not grudgingly, for the Lord your God will bless you in everything you do.There will always be some in the land who are poor. That is why I am commanding you to share freely with the poor and with other Israelites in need.

Destroy even her young bulls— it will be terrible for them, too! Slaughter them all! For Babylon’s day of reckoning has come.

This is what the Lord says:“ The people of Israel have sinned again and again, and I will not let them go unpunished! only if you stop exploiting foreigners, orphans, and widows; only if you stop your murdering; and only if you stop harming yourselves by worshiping idols.

Even common people oppress the poor, rob the needy, and deprive foreigners of justice.

Again, I observed all the oppression that takes place under the sun. I saw the tears of the oppressed, with no one to comfort them. The oppressors have great power, and their victims are helpless.

But I know the Lord will help those they persecute; he will give justice to the poor.

They threw dice to decide which of my people would be their slaves. They traded boys to obtain prostitutes and sold girls for enough wine to get drunk.

What sorrow for you who buy up house after house and field after field, until everyone is evicted and you live alone in the land.

“ No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people.

“ You must not mistreat or oppress foreigners in any way. Remember, you yourselves were once foreigners in the land of Egypt.“ You must not exploit a widow or an orphan.If you exploit them in any way and they cry out to me, then I will certainly hear their cry.My anger will blaze against you, and I will kill you with the sword. Then your wives will be widows and your children fatherless.“ If you lend money to any of my people who are in need, do not charge interest as a money lender would.

Listen to this, you who rob the poor and trample down the needy!You can’t wait for the Sabbath day to be over and the religious festivals to end so you can get back to cheating the helpless. You measure out grain with dishonest measures and cheat the buyer with dishonest scales.And you mix the grain you sell with chaff swept from the floor. Then you enslave poor people for one piece of silver or a pair of sandals.

Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows.“ Come now, let’s settle this,” says the Lord.“ Though your sins are like scarlet, I will make them as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, I will make them as white as wool.If you will only obey me, you will have plenty to eat.But if you turn away and refuse to listen, you will be devoured by the sword of your enemies. I, the Lord, have spoken!”See how Jerusalem, once so faithful, has become a prostitute. Once the home of justice and righteousness, she is now filled with murderers.Once like pure silver, you have become like worthless slag. Once so pure, you are now like watered down wine.Your leaders are rebels, the companions of thieves. All of them love bribes and demand payoffs, but they refuse to defend the cause of orphans or fight for the rights of widows.Therefore, the Lord, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, the Mighty One of Israel, says,“ I will take revenge on my enemies and pay back my foes!

Announce this to the leaders of Philistia and to the great ones of Egypt:“ Take your seats now on the hills around Samaria, and witness the chaos and oppression in Israel.”“ My people have forgotten how to do right,” says the Lord.“ Their fortresses are filled with wealth taken by theft and violence.

“ Among my people are wicked men who lie in wait for victims like a hunter hiding in a blind. They continually set traps to catch people.Like a cage filled with birds, their homes are filled with evil plots. And now they are great and rich.They are fat and sleek, and there is no limit to their wicked deeds. They refuse to provide justice to orphans and deny the rights of the poor.Should I not punish them for this?” says the Lord.“ Should I not avenge myself against such a nation?

A foreign nation you have never heard about will eat the crops you worked so hard to grow. You will suffer under constant oppression and harsh treatment.

“ King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon has eaten and crushed us and drained us of strength. He has swallowed us like a great monster and filled his belly with our riches. He has thrown us out of our own country.

Fathers and mothers are treated with contempt. Foreigners are forced to pay for protection. Orphans and widows are wronged and oppressed among you.

Don’t rob the poor just because you can, or exploit the needy in court.For the Lord is their defender. He will ruin anyone who ruins them.

Don’t be surprised if you see a poor person being oppressed by the powerful and if justice is being miscarried throughout the land. For every official is under orders from higher up, and matters of justice get lost in red tape and bureaucracy.

“ You rejoice and are glad, you who plundered my chosen people. You frisk about like a calf in a meadow and neigh like a stallion.

Don’t cheat your neighbor by moving the ancient boundary markers; don’t take the land of defenseless orphans.For their Redeemer is strong; he himself will bring their charges against you.
