but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,

At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.

But God has helped me to this very day; so I stand here and testify to small and great alike. I am saying nothing beyond what the prophets and Moses said would happen—that the Messiah would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would bring the message of light to his own people and to the Gentiles.”

Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus.

Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon- possessed. They would say,“ In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.”

As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead.“ This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah,” he said.

A group of Epicurean and Stoic philosophers began to debate with him. Some of them asked,“ What is this babbler trying to say?” Others remarked,“ He seems to be advocating foreign gods.” They said this because Paul was preaching the good news about Jesus and the resurrection.
