In fact, Herod and Pontius Pilate met with the Gentiles in this city. They also met with the people of Israel. All of them made plans against your holy servant Jesus. He is the one you anointed.

They tied him up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate the governor.

while you extend your hand to heal, and to bring about miraculous signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

saying,“ The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”

Right away, while Jesus was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived. With him came a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and experts in the law and elders.( Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying,“ The one I kiss is the man. Arrest him and lead him away under guard.”)When Judas arrived, he went up to Jesus immediately and said,“ Rabbi!” and kissed him.Then they took hold of him and arrested him.One of the bystanders drew his sword and struck the high priest’s slave, cutting off his ear.Jesus said to them,“ Have you come with swords and clubs to arrest me like you would an outlaw?Day after day I was with you, teaching in the temple courts, yet you did not arrest me. But this has happened so that the scriptures would be fulfilled.”Then all the disciples left him and fled.A young man was following him, wearing only a linen cloth. They tried to arrest him,but he ran off naked, leaving his linen cloth behind.Then they led Jesus to the high priest, and all the chief priests and elders and experts in the law came together.And Peter had followed him from a distance, up to the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the guards and warming himself by the fire.The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find anything.Many gave false testimony against him, but their testimony did not agree.Some stood up and gave this false testimony against him:“ We heard him say,‘ I will destroy this temple made with hands and in three days build another not made with hands.’”Yet even on this point their testimony did not agree.Then the high priest stood up before them and asked Jesus,“ Have you no answer? What is this that they are testifying against you?”But he was silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him,“ Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?”“ I am,” said Jesus,“ and you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothes and said,“ Why do we still need witnesses?You have heard the blasphemy! What is your verdict?” They all condemned him as deserving death.Then some began to spit on him, and to blindfold him, and to strike him with their fists, saying,“ Prophesy!” The guards also took him and beat him.

“ Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the experts in the law. They will condemn him to death,and will turn him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged severely and crucified. Yet on the third day, he will be raised.”

“ What do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said,‘ Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’

“ Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and experts in the law. They will condemn him to death and will turn him over to the Gentiles.

The angel replied,“ The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called the Son of God.

He came to what was his own, but his own people did not receive him.

The spirit of the sovereign LORD is upon me, because the LORD has chosen me. He has commissioned me to encourage the poor, to help the brokenhearted, to decree the release of captives, and the freeing of prisoners,

But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and blood and water flowed out immediately.

Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.The chief priests and the experts in the law were trying to find some way to execute Jesus, for they were afraid of the people.Then Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve.He went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers of the temple guard how he might betray Jesus, handing him over to them.They were delighted and arranged to give him money.So Judas agreed and began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus when no crowd was present.

and saying,“ You who can destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are God’s Son, come down from the cross!”In the same way even the chief priests– together with the experts in the law and elders– were mocking him:“ He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the king of Israel! If he comes down now from the cross, we will believe in him!He trusts in God– let God, if he wants to, deliver him now because he said,‘ I am God’s Son’!”

Then Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus said,“ You say so.”But when he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he did not respond.Then Pilate said to him,“ Don’t you hear how many charges they are bringing against you?”But he did not answer even one accusation, so that the governor was quite amazed.During the feast the governor was accustomed to release one prisoner to the crowd, whomever they wanted.At that time they had in custody a notorious prisoner named Jesus Barabbas.So after they had assembled, Pilate said to them,“ Whom do you want me to release for you, Jesus Barabbas or Jesus who is called the Christ?”( For he knew that they had handed him over because of envy.)As he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent a message to him:“ Have nothing to do with that innocent man; I have suffered greatly as a result of a dream about him today.”But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus killed.The governor asked them,“ Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said,“ Barabbas!”Pilate said to them,“ Then what should I do with Jesus who is called the Christ?” They all said,“ Crucify him!”He asked,“ Why? What wrong has he done?” But they shouted more insistently,“ Crucify him!”When Pilate saw that he could do nothing, but that instead a riot was starting, he took some water, washed his hands before the crowd and said,“ I am innocent of this man’s blood. You take care of it yourselves!”In reply all the people said,“ Let his blood be on us and on our children!”Then he released Barabbas for them. But after he had Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the governor’s residence and gathered the whole cohort around him.They stripped him and put a scarlet robe around him,and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand, and kneeling down before him, they mocked him:“ Hail, king of the Jews!”They spat on him and took the staff and struck him repeatedly on the head.When they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.As they were going out, they found a man from Cyrene named Simon, whom they forced to carry his cross.They came to a place called Golgotha( which means“ Place of the Skull”)and offered Jesus wine mixed with gall to drink. But after tasting it, he would not drink it.When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes by throwing dice.Then they sat down and kept guard over him there.

Then the chief priests and the elders of the people met together in the palace of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas.They planned to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.

So I began to shepherd the flock destined for slaughter, the most afflicted of all the flock. Then I took two staffs, calling one“ Pleasantness” and the other“ Binders,” and I tended the flock.Next I eradicated the three shepherds in one month, for I ran out of patience with them and, indeed, they detested me as well.

“ The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and the regaining of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed,

“ I myself have installed my king on Zion, my holy hill.”

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were trying to find false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death.But they did not find anything, though many false witnesses came forward. Finally two came forwardand declared,“ This man said,‘ I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”So the high priest stood up and said to him,“ Have you no answer? What is this that they are testifying against you?”But Jesus was silent. The high priest said to him,“ I charge you under oath by the living God, tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.”Jesus said to him,“ You have said it yourself. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his clothes and declared,“ He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? Now you have heard the blasphemy!What is your verdict?” They answered,“ He is guilty and deserves death.”Then they spat in his face and struck him with their fists. And some slapped him,saying,“ Prophesy for us, you Christ! Who hit you?”

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our forefathers, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and rejected in the presence of Pilate after he had decided to release him.But you rejected the Holy and Righteous One and asked that a man who was a murderer be released to you.

In the same way even the chief priests– together with the experts in the law– were mocking him among themselves:“ He saved others, but he cannot save himself!

While this was happening, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.Jesus replied,“ I have spoken publicly to the world. I always taught in the synagogues and in the temple courts, where all the Jewish people assemble together. I have said nothing in secret.Why do you ask me? Ask those who heard what I said. They know what I said.”When Jesus had said this, one of the high priest’s officers who stood nearby struck him on the face and said,“ Is that the way you answer the high priest?”Jesus replied,“ If I have said something wrong, confirm what is wrong. But if I spoke correctly, why strike me?”Then Annas sent him, still tied up, to Caiaphas the high priest.

do you say about the one whom the Father set apart and sent into the world,‘ You are blaspheming,’ because I said,‘ I am the Son of God’?

When he had said these things, Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley. There was an orchard there, and he and his disciples went into it.( Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, knew the place too, because Jesus had met there many times with his disciples.)So Judas obtained a squad of soldiers and some officers of the chief priests and Pharisees. They came to the orchard with lanterns and torches and weapons.Then Jesus, because he knew everything that was going to happen to him, came and asked them,“ Who are you looking for?”They replied,“ Jesus the Nazarene.” He told them,“ I am he.”( Now Judas, the one who betrayed him, was standing there with them.)So when Jesus said to them,“ I am he,” they retreated and fell to the ground.Then Jesus asked them again,“ Who are you looking for?” And they said,“ Jesus the Nazarene.”Jesus replied,“ I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, let these men go.”He said this to fulfill the word he had spoken,“ I have not lost a single one of those whom you gave me.”Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, pulled it out and struck the high priest’s slave, cutting off his right ear.( Now the slave’s name was Malchus.)But Jesus said to Peter,“ Put your sword back into its sheath! Am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?”Then the squad of soldiers with their commanding officer and the officers of the Jewish leaders arrested Jesus and tied him up.They brought him first to Annas, for he was the father- in- law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.( Now it was Caiaphas who had advised the Jewish leaders that it was to their advantage that one man die for the people.)

“ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would have none of it!

with respect to Jesus from Nazareth, that God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with him.

What is man that he should be pure, or one born of woman, that he should be righteous?

Who can make a clean thing come from an unclean? No one!

This is what the LORD, the protector of Israel, their Holy One, says to the one who is despised and rejected by nations, a servant of rulers:“ Kings will see and rise in respect, princes will bow down, because of the faithful LORD, the Holy One of Israel who has chosen you.”

He was despised and rejected by people, one who experienced pain and was acquainted with illness; people hid their faces from him; he was despised, and we considered him insignificant.

Early in the morning, after forming a plan, the chief priests with the elders and the experts in the law and the whole Sanhedrin tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.So Pilate asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?” He replied,“ You say so.”Then the chief priests began to accuse him repeatedly.So Pilate asked him again,“ Have you nothing to say? See how many charges they are bringing against you!”But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.During the feast it was customary to release one prisoner to the people, whomever they requested.A man named Barabbas was imprisoned with rebels who had committed murder during an insurrection.Then the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to release a prisoner for them, as was his custom.So Pilate asked them,“ Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?”( For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.)But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas instead.So Pilate spoke to them again,“ Then what do you want me to do with the one you call king of the Jews?”They shouted back,“ Crucify him!”Pilate asked them,“ Why? What has he done wrong?” But they shouted more insistently,“ Crucify him!”Because he wanted to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them. Then, after he had Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.So the soldiers led him into the palace( that is, the governor’s residence) and called together the whole cohort.They put a purple cloak on him and after braiding a crown of thorns, they put it on him.They began to salute him:“ Hail, king of the Jews!”Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Then they knelt down and paid homage to him.When they had finished mocking him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes back on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.The soldiers forced a passerby to carry his cross, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country( he was the father of Alexander and Rufus).They brought Jesus to a place called Golgotha( which is translated,“ Place of the Skull”).They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, throwing dice for them, to decide what each would take.It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him.The inscription of the charge against him read,“ The king of the Jews.”And they crucified two outlaws with him, one on his right and one on his left.

The kings of the earth form a united front; the rulers collaborate against the LORD and his anointed king.

Two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the chief priests and the experts in the law were trying to find a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him.For they said,“ Not during the feast, so there won’t be a riot among the people.”

You love justice and hate evil. For this reason God, your God has anointed you with the oil of joy, elevating you above your companions.

because you will not leave my soul in Hades, nor permit your Holy One to experience decay.

How then can a human being be righteous before God? How can one born of a woman be pure?

Then they brought Jesus from Caiaphas to the Roman governor’s residence.( Now it was very early morning.) They did not go into the governor’s residence so they would not be ceremonially defiled, but could eat the Passover meal.So Pilate came outside to them and said,“ What accusation do you bring against this man?”They replied,“ If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over to you.”Pilate told them,“ Take him yourselves and pass judgment on him according to your own law!” The Jewish leaders replied,“ We cannot legally put anyone to death.”( This happened to fulfill the word Jesus had spoken when he indicated what kind of death he was going to die.)So Pilate went back into the governor’s residence, summoned Jesus, and asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?”Jesus replied,“ Are you saying this on your own initiative, or have others told you about me?”Pilate answered,“ I am not a Jew, am I? Your own people and your chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?”Jesus replied,“ My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world, my servants would be fighting to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish authorities. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”Then Pilate said,“ So you are a king!” Jesus replied,“ You say that I am a king. For this reason I was born, and for this reason I came into the world– to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.”Pilate asked,“ What is truth?” When he had said this he went back outside to the Jewish leaders and announced,“ I find no basis for an accusation against him.But it is your custom that I release one prisoner for you at the Passover. So do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?”Then they shouted back,“ Not this man, but Barabbas!”( Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.)Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged severely.The soldiers braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and they clothed him in a purple robe.They came up to him again and again and said,“ Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him repeatedly in the face.Again Pilate went out and said to the Jewish leaders,“ Look, I am bringing him out to you, so that you may know that I find no reason for an accusation against him.”So Jesus came outside, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them,“ Look, here is the man!”When the chief priests and their officers saw him, they shouted out,“ Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate said,“ You take him and crucify him! Certainly I find no reason for an accusation against him!”The Jewish leaders replied,“ We have a law, and according to our law he ought to die, because he claimed to be the Son of God!”When Pilate heard what they said, he was more afraid than ever,and he went back into the governor’s residence and said to Jesus,“ Where do you come from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.So Pilate said,“ Do you refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know I have the authority to release you, and to crucify you?”Jesus replied,“ You would have no authority over me at all, unless it was given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of greater sin.”From this point on, Pilate tried to release him. But the Jewish leaders shouted out,“ If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar! Everyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar!”When Pilate heard these words he brought Jesus outside and sat down on the judgment seat in the place called“ The Stone Pavement”( Gabbatha in Aramaic).( Now it was the day of preparation for the Passover, about noon.) Pilate said to the Jewish leaders,“ Look, here is your king!”Then they shouted out,“ Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!” Pilate asked,“ Shall I crucify your king?” The high priests replied,“ We have no king except Caesar!”Then Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus,and carrying his own cross he went out to the place called“ The Place of the Skull”( called in Aramaic Golgotha).There they crucified him along with two others, one on each side, with Jesus in the middle.Pilate also had a notice written and fastened to the cross, which read:“ Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews.”Thus many of the Jewish residents of Jerusalem read this notice, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the notice was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek.Then the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate,“ Do not write,‘ The king of the Jews,’ but rather,‘ This man said, I am king of the Jews.’”Pilate answered,“ What I have written, I have written.”Now when the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and made four shares, one for each soldier, and the tunic remained.( Now the tunic was seamless, woven from top to bottom as a single piece.)So the soldiers said to one another,“ Let’s not tear it, but throw dice to see who will get it.” This took place to fulfill the scripture that says,“ They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they threw dice.” So the soldiers did these things.

Then the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What should I do? I will send my one dear son; perhaps they will respect him.’But when the tenants saw him, they said to one another,‘ This is the heir; let’s kill him so the inheritance will be ours!’So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?He will come and destroy those tenants and give the vineyard to others.” When the people heard this, they said,“ May this never happen!”But Jesus looked straight at them and said,“ Then what is the meaning of that which is written:‘ The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’?Everyone who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, and the one on whom it falls will be crushed.”Then the experts in the law and the chief priests wanted to arrest him that very hour, because they realized he had told this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.

Now the men who were holding Jesus under guard began to mock him and beat him.They blindfolded him and asked him repeatedly,“ Prophesy! Who hit you?”They also said many other things against him, reviling him.When day came, the council of the elders of the people gathered together, both the chief priests and the experts in the law. Then they led Jesus away to their counciland said,“ If you are the Christ, tell us.” But he said to them,“ If I tell you, you will not believe,and if I ask you, you will not answer.But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”So they all said,“ Are you the Son of God, then?” He answered them,“ You say that I am.”Then they said,“ Why do we need further testimony? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips!”Then the whole group of them rose up and brought Jesus before Pilate.They began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man subverting our nation, forbidding us to pay the tribute tax to Caesar and claiming that he himself is Christ, a king.”So Pilate asked Jesus,“ Are you the king of the Jews?” He replied,“ You say so.”Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds,“ I find no basis for an accusation against this man.”But they persisted in saying,“ He incites the people by teaching throughout all Judea. It started in Galilee and ended up here!”

When he learned that he was from Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who also happened to be in Jerusalem at that time.When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had long desired to see him, because he had heard about him and was hoping to see him perform some miraculous sign.So Herod questioned him at considerable length; Jesus gave him no answer.The chief priests and the experts in the law were there, vehemently accusing him.Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him. Then, dressing him in elegant clothes, Herod sent him back to Pilate.That very day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other, for prior to this they had been enemies.Then Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers, and the people,and said to them,“ You brought me this man as one who was misleading the people. When I examined him before you, I did not find this man guilty of anything you accused him of doing.Neither did Herod, for he sent him back to us. Look, he has done nothing deserving death.I will therefore have him flogged and release him.”

While he was still speaking, suddenly a crowd appeared, and the man named Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He walked up to Jesus to kiss him.But Jesus said to him,“ Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said,“ Lord, should we use our swords?”Then one of them struck the high priest’s slave, cutting off his right ear.But Jesus said,“ Enough of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders who had come out to get him,“ Have you come out with swords and clubs like you would against an outlaw?

For it is indeed fitting for us to have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separate from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

After they had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said,“ Get up, take the child and his mother and flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to look for the child to kill him.”Then he got up, took the child and his mother during the night, and went to Egypt.He stayed there until Herod died. In this way what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet was fulfilled:“ I called my Son out of Egypt.”When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, he became enraged. He sent men to kill all the children in Bethlehem and throughout the surrounding region from the age of two and under, according to the time he had learned from the wise men.

Then Jesus took the twelve aside and said to them,“ Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished.For he will be handed over to the Gentiles; he will be mocked, mistreated, and spat on.They will flog him severely and kill him. Yet on the third day he will rise again.”

At that time, some Pharisees came up and said to Jesus,“ Get away from here, because Herod wants to kill you.”But he said to them,“ Go and tell that fox,‘ Look, I am casting out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will complete my work.Nevertheless I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the next day, because it is impossible that a prophet should be killed outside Jerusalem.’

At that time Herod the tetrarch heard reports about Jesus,
