After tying him up, they led him away and handed him over to Pilate, the governor.

while you stretch out your hand for healing, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”

saying,“ It is necessary that the Son of Man suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.”

While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, suddenly arrived. With him was a mob, with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders.His betrayer had given them a signal.“ The one I kiss,” he said,“ he’s the one; arrest him and take him away under guard.”So when he came, immediately he went up to Jesus and said,“ Rabbi!” and kissed him.They took hold of him and arrested him.One of those who stood by drew his sword, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his ear.Jesus said to them,“ Have you come out with swords and clubs, as if I were a criminal, to capture me?Every day I was among you, teaching in the temple, and you didn’t arrest me. But the Scriptures must be fulfilled.”Then they all deserted him and ran away.Now a certain young man, wearing nothing but a linen cloth, was following him. They caught hold of him,but he left the linen cloth behind and ran away naked.They led Jesus away to the high priest, and all the chief priests, the elders, and the scribes assembled.Peter followed him at a distance, right into the high priest’s courtyard. He was sitting with the servants, warming himself by the fire.The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they could not find any.For many were giving false testimony against him, and the testimonies did not agree.Some stood up and gave false testimony against him, stating,“ We heard him say,‘ I will destroy this temple made with human hands, and in three days I will build another not made by hands.’”Yet their testimony did not agree even on this.Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus,“ Don’t you have an answer to what these men are testifying against you?”But he kept silent and did not answer. Again the high priest questioned him,“ Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?”“ I am,” said Jesus,“ and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming with the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his robes and said,“ Why do we still need witnesses?You have heard the blasphemy. What is your decision?” They all condemned him as deserving death.Then some began to spit on him, to blindfold him, and to beat him, saying,“ Prophesy!” The temple servants also took him and slapped him.

“ See, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death.They will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked, flogged, and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised.”

“ What do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said,‘ My son, go work in the vineyard today.’

“ See, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death. Then they will hand him over to the Gentiles,

The angel replied to her,“ The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him.

The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and freedom to the prisoners;

But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.

The Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called Passover, was approaching.The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put him to death, because they were afraid of the people.Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, who was numbered among the Twelve.He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police how he could hand him over to them.They were glad and agreed to give him silver.So he accepted the offer and started looking for a good opportunity to betray him to them when the crowd was not present.

and saying,“ You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!”In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him and said,“ He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.He trusts in God; let God rescue him now— if he takes pleasure in him! For he said,‘ I am the Son of God.’”

Now Jesus stood before the governor.“ Are you the king of the Jews?” the governor asked him. Jesus answered,“ You say so.”While he was being accused by the chief priests and elders, he didn’t answer.Then Pilate said to him,“ Don’t you hear how much they are testifying against you?”But he didn’t answer him on even one charge, so that the governor was quite amazed.At the festival the governor’s custom was to release to the crowd a prisoner they wanted.At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them,“ Who is it you want me to release for you— Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”For he knew it was because of envy that they had handed him over.While he was sitting on the judge’s bench, his wife sent word to him,“ Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for today I’ve suffered terribly in a dream because of him.”The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus.The governor asked them,“ Which of the two do you want me to release for you?”“ Barabbas!” they answered.Pilate asked them,“ What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ?” They all answered,“ Crucify him!”Then he said,“ Why? What has he done wrong?” But they kept shouting all the more,“ Crucify him!”When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said,“ I am innocent of this man’s blood. See to it yourselves!”All the people answered,“ His blood be on us and on our children!”Then he released Barabbas to them and, after having Jesus flogged, handed him over to be crucified.Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the governor’s residence and gathered the whole company around him.They stripped him and dressed him in a scarlet robe.They twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and placed a staff in his right hand. And they knelt down before him and mocked him:“ Hail, king of the Jews!”Then they spat on him, took the staff, and kept hitting him on the head.After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe, put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.As they were going out, they found a Cyrenian man named Simon. They forced him to carry his cross.When they came to a place called Golgotha( which means Place of the Skull),they gave him wine mixed with gall to drink. But when he tasted it, he refused to drink it.After crucifying him, they divided his clothes by casting lots.Then they sat down and were guarding him there.

Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the courtyard of the high priest, who was named Caiaphas,and they conspired to arrest Jesus in a treacherous way and kill him.

So I shepherded the flock intended for slaughter, the oppressed of the flock. I took two staffs, calling one Favor and the other Union, and I shepherded the flock.In one month I got rid of three shepherds. I became impatient with them, and they also detested me.

The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free the oppressed,

“ I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they could put him to death,but they could not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. Finally, two who came forwardstated,“ This man said,‘ I can destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”The high priest stood up and said to him,“ Don’t you have an answer to what these men are testifying against you?”But Jesus kept silent. The high priest said to him,“ I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”“ You have said it,” Jesus told him.“ But I tell you, in the future you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”Then the high priest tore his robes and said,“ He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? See, now you’ve heard the blasphemy.What is your decision?” They answered,“ He deserves death!”Then they spat in his face and beat him; others slapped himand said,“ Prophesy to us, Messiah! Who was it that hit you?”

The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our ancestors, has glorified his servant Jesus, whom you handed over and denied before Pilate, though he had decided to release him.You denied the Holy and Righteous One and asked to have a murderer released to you.

In the same way, the chief priests with the scribes were mocking him among themselves and saying,“ He saved others, but he cannot save himself!

The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about his teaching.“ I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered him.“ I have always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews gather, and I haven’t spoken anything in secret.Why do you question me? Question those who heard what I told them. Look, they know what I said.”When he had said these things, one of the officials standing by slapped Jesus, saying,“ Is this the way you answer the high priest?”“ If I have spoken wrongly,” Jesus answered him,“ give evidence about the wrong; but if rightly, why do you hit me?”Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

do you say,‘ You are blaspheming’ to the one the Father set apart and sent into the world, because I said: I am the Son of God?

After Jesus had said these things, he went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valley, where there was a garden, and he and his disciples went into it.Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus often met there with his disciples.So Judas took a company of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees and came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.Then Jesus, knowing everything that was about to happen to him, went out and said to them,“ Who is it that you’re seeking?”“ Jesus of Nazareth,” they answered.“ I am he,” Jesus told them. Judas, who betrayed him, was also standing with them.When Jesus told them,“ I am he,” they stepped back and fell to the ground.Then he asked them again,“ Who is it that you’re seeking?”“ Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.“ I told you I am he,” Jesus replied.“ So if you’re looking for me, let these men go.”This was to fulfill the words he had said:“ I have not lost one of those you have given me.”Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear.( The servant’s name was Malchus.)At that, Jesus said to Peter,“ Put your sword away! Am I not to drink the cup the Father has given me?”Then the company of soldiers, the commander, and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus and tied him up.First they led him to Annas, since he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.Caiaphas was the one who had advised the Jews that it would be better for one man to die for the people.

“ Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing!

how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how he went about doing good and healing all who were under the tyranny of the devil, because God was with him.

What is a mere human, that he should be pure, or one born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

Who can produce something pure from what is impure? No one!

This is what the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, his Holy One, says to one who is despised, to one abhorred by people, to a servant of rulers:“ Kings will see, princes will stand up, and they will all bow down because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel— and he has chosen you.”

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him.

As soon as it was morning, having held a meeting with the elders, scribes, and the whole Sanhedrin, the chief priests tied Jesus up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.So Pilate asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?” He answered him,“ You say so.”And the chief priests accused him of many things.Pilate questioned him again,“ Aren’t you going to answer? Look how many things they are accusing you of!”But Jesus still did not answer, and so Pilate was amazed.At the festival Pilate used to release for the people a prisoner whom they requested.There was one named Barabbas, who was in prison with rebels who had committed murder during the rebellion.The crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do for them as was his custom.Pilate answered them,“ Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you?”For he knew it was because of envy that the chief priests had handed him over.But the chief priests stirred up the crowd so that he would release Barabbas to them instead.Pilate asked them again,“ Then what do you want me to do with the one you call the king of the Jews?”Again they shouted,“ Crucify him!”Pilate said to them,“ Why? What has he done wrong?” But they shouted all the more,“ Crucify him!”Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them; and after having Jesus flogged, he handed him over to be crucified.The soldiers led him away into the palace( that is, the governor’s residence) and called the whole company together.They dressed him in a purple robe, twisted together a crown of thorns, and put it on him.And they began to salute him,“ Hail, king of the Jews!”They were hitting him on the head with a stick and spitting on him. Getting down on their knees, they were paying him homage.After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple robe and put his clothes on him. They led him out to crucify him.They forced a man coming in from the country, who was passing by, to carry Jesus’s cross. He was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha( which means Place of the Skull).They tried to give him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it.Then they crucified him and divided his clothes, casting lots for them to decide what each would get.Now it was nine in the morning when they crucified him.The inscription of the charge written against him was: THE KING OF THE JEWS.They crucified two criminals with him, one on his right and one on his left.

The kings of the earth take their stand, and the rulers conspire together against the LORD and his Anointed One:

It was two days before the Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a cunning way to arrest Jesus and kill him.“ Not during the festival,” they said,“ so that there won’t be a riot among the people.”

You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of joy more than your companions.

because you will not abandon me in Hades or allow your holy one to see decay.

How can a human be justified before God? How can one born of woman be pure?

Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the governor’s headquarters. It was early morning. They did not enter the headquarters themselves; otherwise they would be defiled and unable to eat the Passover.So Pilate came out to them and said,“ What charge do you bring against this man?”They answered him,“ If this man weren’t a criminal, we wouldn’t have handed him over to you.”Pilate told them,“ You take him and judge him according to your law.”“ It’s not legal for us to put anyone to death,” the Jews declared.They said this so that Jesus’s words might be fulfilled indicating what kind of death he was going to die.Then Pilate went back into the headquarters, summoned Jesus, and said to him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?”Jesus answered,“ Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about me?”“ I’m not a Jew, am I?” Pilate replied.“ Your own nation and the chief priests handed you over to me. What have you done?”“ My kingdom is not of this world,” said Jesus.“ If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would fight, so that I wouldn’t be handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.”“ You are a king then?” Pilate asked.“ You say that I’m a king,” Jesus replied.“ I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”“ What is truth?” said Pilate. After he had said this, he went out to the Jews again and told them,“ I find no grounds for charging him.You have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at the Passover. So, do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?”They shouted back,“ Not this man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a revolutionary.Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.The soldiers also twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and clothed him in a purple robe.And they kept coming up to him and saying,“ Hail, king of the Jews!” and were slapping his face.Pilate went outside again and said to them,“ Look, I’m bringing him out to you to let you know I find no grounds for charging him.”Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them,“ Here is the man!”When the chief priests and the temple servants saw him, they shouted,“ Crucify! Crucify!” Pilate responded,“ Take him and crucify him yourselves, since I find no grounds for charging him.”“ We have a law,” the Jews replied to him,“ and according to that law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.”When Pilate heard this statement, he was more afraid than ever.He went back into the headquarters and asked Jesus,“ Where are you from?” But Jesus did not give him an answer.So Pilate said to him,“ Do you refuse to speak to me? Don’t you know that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you?”“ You would have no authority over me at all,” Jesus answered him,“ if it hadn’t been given you from above. This is why the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin.”From that moment Pilate kept trying to release him. But the Jews shouted,“ If you release this man, you are not Caesar’s friend. Anyone who makes himself a king opposes Caesar!”When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside. He sat down on the judge’s seat in a place called the Stone Pavement( but in Aramaic, Gabbatha).It was the preparation day for the Passover, and it was about noon. Then he told the Jews,“ Here is your king!”They shouted,“ Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate said to them,“ Should I crucify your king?”“ We have no king but Caesar!” the chief priests answered.Then he handed him over to be crucified. Then they took Jesus away.Carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.There they crucified him and two others with him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle.Pilate also had a sign made and put on the cross. It said: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek.So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate,“ Don’t write,‘ The king of the Jews,’ but that he said,‘ I am the king of the Jews.’”Pilate replied,“ What I have written, I have written.”When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from the top.So they said to one another,“ Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” This happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled that says: They divided my clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing. This is what the soldiers did.

“ Then the owner of the vineyard said,‘ What should I do? I will send my beloved son. Perhaps they will respect him.’“ But when the tenant farmers saw him, they discussed it among themselves and said,‘ This is the heir. Let’s kill him, so that the inheritance will be ours.’So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.“ What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?He will come and kill those farmers and give the vineyard to others.” But when they heard this they said,“ That must never happen!”But he looked at them and said,“ Then what is the meaning of this Scripture: The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone?Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but on whomever it falls, it will shatter him.”Then the scribes and the chief priests looked for a way to get their hands on him that very hour, because they knew he had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.

The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating him.After blindfolding him, they kept asking,“ Prophesy! Who was it that hit you?”And they were saying many other blasphemous things to him.When daylight came, the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes, convened and brought him before their Sanhedrin.They said,“ If you are the Messiah, tell us.” But he said to them,“ If I do tell you, you will not believe.And if I ask you, you will not answer.But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”They all asked,“ Are you, then, the Son of God?” And he said to them,“ You say that I am.”“ Why do we need any more testimony,” they said,“ since we’ve heard it ourselves from his mouth?”Then their whole assembly rose up and brought him before Pilate.They began to accuse him, saying,“ We found this man misleading our nation, opposing payment of taxes to Caesar, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”So Pilate asked him,“ Are you the king of the Jews?” He answered him,“ You say so.”Pilate then told the chief priests and the crowds,“ I find no grounds for charging this man.”But they kept insisting,“ He stirs up the people, teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he started even to here.”

Finding that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem during those days.Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see him because he had heard about him and was hoping to see some miracle performed by him.So he kept asking him questions, but Jesus did not answer him.The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated him with contempt, mocked him, dressed him in bright clothing, and sent him back to Pilate.That very day Herod and Pilate became friends. Previously, they had been enemies.Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people,and said to them,“ You have brought me this man as one who misleads the people. But in fact, after examining him in your presence, I have found no grounds to charge this man with those things you accuse him of.Neither has Herod, because he sent him back to us. Clearly, he has done nothing to deserve death.Therefore, I will have him whipped and then release him.”

While he was still speaking, suddenly a mob came, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss him,but Jesus said to him,“ Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”When those around him saw what was going to happen, they asked,“ Lord, should we strike with the sword?”Then one of them struck the high priest’s servant and cut off his right ear.But Jesus responded,“ No more of this!” And touching his ear, he healed him.Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for him,“ Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal?

For this is the kind of high priest we need: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

After they were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying,“ Get up! Take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to search for the child to kill him.”So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night, and escaped to Egypt.He stayed there until Herod’s death, so that what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet might be fulfilled: Out of Egypt I called my Son.Then Herod, when he realized that he had been outwitted by the wise men, flew into a rage. He gave orders to massacre all the boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under, in keeping with the time he had learned from the wise men.

Then he took the Twelve aside and told them,“ See, we are going up to Jerusalem. Everything that is written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.For he will be handed over to the Gentiles, and he will be mocked, insulted, spit on;and after they flog him, they will kill him, and he will rise on the third day.”

At that time some Pharisees came and told him,“ Go, get out of here. Herod wants to kill you.”He said to them,“ Go tell that fox,‘ Look, I’m driving out demons and performing healings today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will complete my work.’Yet it is necessary that I travel today, tomorrow, and the next day, because it is not possible for a prophet to perish outside of Jerusalem.
