Paul wanted to appear before the crowd, but the disciples would not let him.

Paul wanted to appear in front of the crowd. But the believers wouldn’t let him.

But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him.

Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said,“ People of Athens! I see that you are extremely religious in every respect.For as I was passing through and observing the objects of your worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed,‘ To an Unknown God.’ Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you.The God who made the world and everything in it— he is Lord of heaven and earth— does not live in shrines made by hands.Neither is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives everyone life and breath and all things.From one man he has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live.He did this so that they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find him, though he is not far from each one of us.For in him we live and move and have our being, as even some of your own poets have said,‘ For we are also his offspring.’Since, then, we are God’s offspring, we shouldn’t think that the divine nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image fashioned by human art and imagination.“ Therefore, having overlooked the times of ignorance, God now commands all people everywhere to repent,because he has set a day when he is going to judge the world in righteousness by the man he has appointed. He has provided proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.”

But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to his aid, struck the Philistine, and killed him. Then David’s men swore to him,“ You must never again go out with us to battle. You must not extinguish the lamp of Israel.”

Paul said,“ I am a Jewish man from Tarsus of Cilicia, a citizen of an important city. Now I ask you, let me speak to the people.”

He then sent out the troops, a third under Joab, a third under Joab’s brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, and a third under Ittai of Gath. The king said to the troops,“ I must also march out with you.”“ You must not go!” the people pleaded.“ If we have to flee, they will not pay any attention to us. Even if half of us die, they will not pay any attention to us because you are worth ten thousand of us. Therefore, it is better if you support us from the city.”

The apostles Barnabas and Paul tore their robes when they heard this and rushed into the crowd, shouting,“ People! Why are you doing these things? We are people also, just like you, and we are proclaiming good news to you, that you turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything in them.In past generations he allowed all the nations to go their own way,although he did not leave himself without a witness, since he did what is good by giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons and filling you with food and your hearts with joy.”Even though they said these things, they barely stopped the crowds from sacrificing to them.
