After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them:“ Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe.

When Paul and Barnabas had a major argument and debate with them, the church appointed Paul and Barnabas and some others from among them to go up to meet with the apostles and elders in Jerusalem about this point of disagreement.

On the contrary, when they saw that I was entrusted with the gospel to the uncircumcised just as Peter was to the circumcised( for he who empowered Peter for his apostleship to the circumcised also empowered me for my apostleship to the Gentiles)and when James, Cephas, and John, who had a reputation as pillars, recognized the grace that had been given to me, they gave to Barnabas and me the right hand of fellowship, agreeing that we would go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.

Consequently faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the preached word of Christ.But I ask, have they not heard? Yes, they have: Their voice has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.

But get up, go down, and accompany them without hesitation, because I have sent them.”

But the things God foretold long ago through all the prophets– that his Christ would suffer– he has fulfilled in this way.

The LORD God of Israel chose me out of my father’s entire family to become king over Israel and have a permanent dynasty. Indeed, he chose Judah as leader, and my father’s family within Judah, and then he picked me out from among my father’s sons and made me king over all Israel.From all the many sons the LORD has given me, he chose Solomon my son to rule on his behalf over Israel.

who said by the Holy Spirit through your servant David our forefather,‘ Why do the nations rage, and the peoples plot foolish things?

John replied,“ No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven.

Do everything without grumbling or arguing,

You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that remains, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.

Then they prayed,“ Lord, you know the hearts of all. Show us which one of these two you have chosen

But I do not consider my life worth anything to myself, so that I may finish my task and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the good news of God’s grace.

And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven, and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven.”

The Spirit told me to accompany them without hesitation. These six brothers also went with me, and we entered the man’s house.He informed us how he had seen an angel standing in his house and saying,‘ Send to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter,who will speak a message to you by which you and your entire household will be saved.’Then as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as he did on us at the beginning.And I remembered the word of the Lord, as he used to say,‘ John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’Therefore if God gave them the same gift as he also gave us after believing in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to hinder God?”When they heard this, they ceased their objections and praised God, saying,“ So then, God has granted the repentance that leads to life even to the Gentiles.”

Then the LORD reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me,“ I will most assuredly give you the words you are to speak for me.

While they were serving the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,“ Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

Therefore send to Joppa and summon Simon, who is called Peter. This man is staying as a guest in the house of Simon the tanner, by the sea.’Therefore I sent for you at once, and you were kind enough to come. So now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to say to us.”Then Peter started speaking:“ I now truly understand that God does not show favoritism in dealing with people,but in every nation the person who fears him and does what is right is welcomed before him.You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, proclaiming the good news of peace through Jesus Christ( he is Lord of all)–you know what happened throughout Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John announced:with respect to Jesus from Nazareth, that God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, because God was with him.We are witnesses of all the things he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They killed him by hanging him on a tree,but God raised him up on the third day and caused him to be seen,not by all the people, but by us, the witnesses God had already chosen, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead.He commanded us to preach to the people and to warn them that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead.About him all the prophets testify, that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who heard the message.The circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were greatly astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles,for they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said,“ No one can withhold the water for these people to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we did, can he?”So he gave orders to have them baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay for several days.

So now go, and I will be with your mouth and will teach you what you must say.”

Now send men to Joppa and summon a man named Simon, who is called Peter.This man is staying as a guest with a man named Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea.”

They had a sharp disagreement, so that they parted company. Barnabas took along Mark and sailed away to Cyprus,

But the Lord said to him,“ Go, because this man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before Gentiles and kings and the people of Israel.

“ Brothers, the scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit foretold through David concerning Judas– who became the guide for those who arrested Jesus–
