在日光之下，我又看見一樣智慧，覺得很有意義：有一座小城，人數不多；有一個大君王來進攻，把它包圍，建造巨大的高壘攻城。城裡有一個貧窮但有智慧的人，用他的智慧救了那城。然而，卻沒有人記念那窮人。於是我說：“智慧勝過武力”，但是那個窮人的智慧被藐視，他的話也沒有人聽從。聽智慧人安安靜靜說出來的話，勝過聽管理愚昧者的人的喊叫。智慧勝於戰鬥的武器，但一個罪人能破壞許多好事。

事後大衛聽到了，就說：“關於尼珥的兒子押尼珥的血案，我和我的國家，在耶和華面前永遠是無辜的。願這流人血的罪歸到約押的頭上和他父親的全家！又願約押家不斷有患血漏病的、長痲風的、拿拐杖的、倒斃在劍下的和缺乏糧食的。”因押尼珥在基遍的戰場上，殺死了他們的兄弟亞撒黑，約押和他的兄弟亞比篩就殺了押尼珥。大衛對約押和與他在一起的眾人說：“你們要撕裂衣服，腰束麻布，在押尼珥面前哀哭！”大衛王也走在棺木後面。他們把押尼珥埋葬在希伯崙。王在押尼珥的墓旁放聲大哭，眾人也都哭了。王又為押尼珥作了哀歌，說：“難道押尼珥死去，要像愚妄的人死去一樣嗎？你的手沒有被繩索綁住，你的腳也沒有被銅鍊鎖住，你倒斃，好像人在暴徒面前倒斃一樣！”於是，眾民又為押尼珥哀哭。還在白天的時候，眾人都來勸大衛吃點飯；大衛起誓說：“我若在日落以前吃飯或吃甚麼東西，願神降罰我，重重地降罰我。”眾人看見了，就都喜悅。王所作的一切，他們都很喜悅。那一天眾人和全以色列都知道，殺死尼珥的兒子押尼珥，並不是出於王的意思。王對他的臣僕說：“你們不知道今天在以色列中，有一位將領和偉人倒斃了嗎？今天我雖然受膏為王，但我還是幼弱的。洗魯雅的兩個兒子太強了，非我所能應付。願耶和華照著惡人所行的惡，報應惡人。”

對惡行已判定的刑罰遲遲沒有執行，世人的心就充滿行惡的意圖。

大衛派人到約押那裡，說：“你打發赫人烏利亞到我這裡來。”約押就打發烏利亞去見大衛。烏利亞來到大衛那裡，大衛就問約押和士兵可好，又問戰場上的情形怎樣。大衛對烏利亞說：“你回家去，洗洗腳吧！”烏利亞就離開了王宮。隨後王的一份禮物也跟著送去。烏利亞卻和他主人的臣僕一同睡在王宮門外，沒有回到自己家裡去。有人告訴大衛說：“烏利亞沒有下到自己家裡去。”大衛就問烏利亞：“你不是從遠路回來嗎？為甚麼不下到自己家裡去呢？”烏利亞回答大衛說：“約櫃、以色列人和猶大人都住在棚裡，我主人約押和我主人的臣僕都在野地安營，我怎能回家吃喝，與妻子同睡呢？我指著王和王的生命發誓：我絕不敢作這樣的事。”大衛對烏利亞說：“你今天還留在這裡，明天我才打發你去。”那一天，烏利亞就留在耶路撒冷。次日，大衛召了烏利亞來，叫烏利亞與他一起吃喝，使他喝醉。到了晚上，烏利亞出去，與他主人的臣僕一同睡在自己的床鋪上，還是沒有下到自己家裡去。到了早晨，大衛寫了一封給約押的信，交烏利亞親手帶去。他在信裡寫著說：“要把烏利亞派到戰鬥最猛烈的前線去，然後你們就退到他後邊，讓他被擊殺。”那時，約押正在圍城，他知道哪裡有強悍的守軍，就派烏利亞到那裡去。城裡的人出來，與約押交戰。大衛的僕人中有一些倒斃了，赫人烏利亞也死了。於是，約押派人去把戰事的一切情形都報告大衛。他又吩咐那使者說：“你把戰事的一切情形對王說完了以後，王若是大怒，責問你：‘你們為甚麼那樣靠近那城爭戰呢？你們不知道敵人會從城牆上射箭下來嗎？從前擊殺了耶路‧比設的兒子亞比米勒的是誰呢？不是一個婦人從城牆上把一塊磨石丟在他身上，他就死在提備斯嗎？你們為甚麼靠近城牆呢？’你就回答：‘王的僕人赫人烏利亞也死了。’”

有一個聰明的婦人在城牆上呼叫：“請聽！請聽！請你們對約押說：‘請你走近這裡，我有話對你說。’”

約押吹響號角，眾人就回來，不再追趕以色列人；因為約押攔阻眾人繼續追趕。

於是約押吹響號角，眾人就站住，不再追趕以色列人，也不再打仗了。
