現在，你們的主掃羅死了，猶大家已經膏立我作他們的王，所以你們要堅強，作英勇的人。」

非利士人聽說大衛被膏立為以色列的王，非利士全軍就上來尋索大衛。大衛聽說了，就下到要塞去。

猶大眾人回應以色列人，說：「因為王與我們是親族。你們為什麼因這事惱火呢？難道我們吃了王的什麼東西，或者我們得了什麼好處嗎？」

大衛在希伯崙作猶大家的王共七年零六個月。

猶大啊，你的兄弟們必稱讚你，你的手必壓住仇敵的頸項，你父親的眾子必向你下拜。猶大是只小獅子；我兒啊，你獵食而歸，屈身蹲伏，躺如公獅，臥如母獅，誰敢驚動你？權杖必不離開猶大，王杖必不離他兩腳之間，直到「細羅」來到，萬民都要歸順他。

大衛王派人去見祭司撒督和亞比亞特，說：「你們要問猶大的長老們，說：『你們怎麼能作最後請王回宮的人呢？以色列眾人的話已經傳到王和他的居所那裡。
