The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he said:“ O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you— O Absalom, my son, my son!”

And the king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And as he went, he said,“ O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!”

The king was overcome with emotion. He went up to the room over the gateway and burst into tears. And as he went, he cried,“ O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you! O Absalom, my son, my son.”

The king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber above the city gate and wept. As he walked, he cried,“ My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!”

Then the king trembled and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And this is what he said as he walked:“ My son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!”

Then the king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept. And as he went, he said thus:“ O my son Absalom— my son, my son Absalom— if only I had died in your place! O Absalom my son, my son!”

( 19: 1) The king then became very upset. He went up to the upper room over the gate and wept. As he went he said,“ My son, Absalom! My son, my son, Absalom! If only I could have died in your place! Absalom, my son, my son!”

The king was much moved, and went up to the room over the gate, and wept. As he went, he said,“ My son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! I wish I had died for you, Absalom, my son, my son!”

The king covered his face. He cried loudly,“ My son Absalom! Absalom, my son, my son!”

These are the proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes his father glad. But a foolish son brings sorrow to his mother.

A foolish child makes his father sad and his mother sorry.

Now please forgive their sin. But if you won’t, then erase my name out of the book you have written.”

A father is tender and kind to his children. In the same way, the Lord is tender and kind to those who have respect for him.

So time after time members of your own royal house will be killed with swords. That’s because you turned your back on me. You took the wife of Uriah, the Hittite, to be your own.’“ The Lord also says,‘ I am going to bring trouble on you. It will come from your own family. I will take your wives away. That was the child David had by Uriah’s wife.David begged God to heal the child. David didn’t eat anything. He spent his nights lying on the ground. He put on the rough clothes people wear when they’re sad.His most trusted servants stood beside him. They wanted him to get up from the ground. But he refused to do it. And he wouldn’t eat any food with them.On the seventh day the child died. David’s attendants were afraid to tell him the child was dead. They thought,“ While the child was still alive, we spoke to David. But he wouldn’t listen to us. So how can we now tell him the child is dead? He might do something terrible to himself.”David saw that his attendants were whispering to one another. Then he realized the child was dead.“ Has the child died?” he asked.“ Yes,” they replied.“ He’s dead.”Then David got up from the ground. After he washed himself, he put on lotions. He changed his clothes. He went into the house of the Lord and worshiped him. Then he went to his own house. He asked for some food. They served it to him. And he ate it.His attendants asked him,“ Why are you acting like this? While the child was still alive, you wouldn’t eat anything. You cried a lot. But now that the child is dead, you get up and eat!”He answered,“ While the child was still alive, I didn’t eat anything. And I cried a lot. I thought,‘ Who knows? The Lord might have mercy on me. He might let the child live.’But now he’s dead. So why should I continue to go without food? Can I bring him back to life again? Someday I’ll go to him. But he won’t return to me.”

I am so concerned about my people, who are members of my own race. I am ready to be cursed, if that would help them. I am even willing to be separated from Christ.

Elijah was a human being, just as we are. He prayed hard that it wouldn’t rain. And it didn’t rain on the land for three and a half years.
