第二天掃羅把人民分為三隊，在晨更時候進了亞捫人營中，擊敗他們直到太陽正熱的時候；剩下的人都潰散，沒有剩下二人同在一處的。

亞比米勒就把他的人分作三隊，埋伏在野外；他在那裏看望着；忽見有人從城裏出來，他就起來攻打他們，擊殺他們。

大衛聽見了，就差派約押帶着全隊勇士出去。亞捫人出來，在城門外擺陣；瑣巴和利合的亞蘭人跟陀伯人瑪迦人另外在野地裏擺陣。約押見前後都有戰陣擺着，就從以色列所有的精兵中挑選了一些來，把他們擺好了陣、以便對亞蘭人接戰。卻把其餘的兵眾交在他兄弟亞比篩手下，使他擺陣、去對亞捫人接戰。

依我的計謀，不如將以色列眾人、從但直到別是巴、如同海邊的沙那麼多、全都聚集到你這裏來；你就親自在他們中間行軍。
