非利士人攻打以色列人；以色列人從非利士人面前逃跑，在基利波山有被刺死倒斃的。非利士人緊緊地追趕掃羅和他兒子們；非利士人擊殺了掃羅的兒子約拿單、亞比拿達、麥基舒亞。戰事很劇烈地擊打了掃羅；射箭的人射中了他；他被弓箭手射傷得極厲害。就對拿軍器的護兵說：『拔出刀來，將我刺透，免得這些沒受割禮的人來刺透我、作弄我。』拿軍器的護兵因為非常懼怕，不情願刺他；掃羅就拿刀，自己伏上。拿軍器的護兵見掃羅已死，他也伏在自己的刀上，和他同死。

追趕我們的比空中的鷹還快；他們在山上把我們追得火急，在曠野埋伏等着我們。

當時洗魯雅的三個兒子、約押、亞比篩、亞撒黑、也在那裏；亞撒黑的腿輕快、如同田野的瞪羚羊一般。

它一掠而去，同蒲快艇一樣；如急落攫食的兀鷹。

獅子、在野獸中最雄猛，在任何獸面前都不迴避的，

迦得人之中有的分出來、到曠野的山寨去投奔大衛，都是有力氣英勇的人、對戰事很有經驗的人，能使用大盾牌和槍；他們的臉面好像獅子的臉面；說到快跑、他們就如山上的瞪羚羊：

耶何耶大的兒子比拿雅、是甲薛有力氣的人，曾行過大有作為的事；他擊殺了摩押兩隻小獅；又在下雪的日子下到坑中去擊殺一隻獅子。

約拿單對他說：『你絕對不至於死：我父親作的、無論大小事，沒有不向我披露的；為甚麼這事我父親偏要對我隱瞞呢？決無此理。』

大衛對掃羅說完了話，約拿單的心和大衛的心就連結在一起；約拿單愛大衛、如同愛自己的性命。
