非利士人與以色列人爭戰，以色列人從非利士人面前逃跑，被殺的人倒在基利波山上。非利士人追上掃羅和他的兒子們，殺死了掃羅的兒子約拿單、亞比拿達和麥基舒亞。掃羅遭到猛烈的攻擊，弓箭手射中了他，他受到射手的重創。掃羅對替他拿兵器的說：「拔出你的刀來，把我刺死！免得這些未受割禮的人來刺死我，折辱我。」但拿兵器的不肯，因為他極其害怕。於是掃羅拿起刀，伏在刀上。替他拿兵器的看見掃羅死了，也伏在自己的刀上，隨掃羅一起死了。

當時洗魯雅的三個兒子約押、亞比篩和亞撒暉都在那裡。亞撒暉腿腳敏捷，如同野羚羊。

就是：動物中勇猛的獅子，牠面對一切都不退縮；

耶赫亞達的兒子比納雅，是來自甲薛的勇士，也有許多事蹟。他曾擊殺了摩押的兩個英雄，也曾在下雪的日子，下到坑裡殺了一隻獅子。

約拿單回答他：「絕對沒有，你不會死的。看哪，我父親做事，無論大小沒有不告訴我的，我父親怎麼會向我隱瞞這事呢？沒有這樣的事！」

大衛和掃羅說完了話以後，約拿單的心就與大衛的心相契合，約拿單愛他如同愛自己的性命。
