非利士人与以色列人交战。以色列人从非利士人面前逃跑，有很多人在基利波山上倒毙。非利士人紧紧追赶扫罗和他的众子，击杀了扫罗的儿子约拿单、亚比拿达和麦基舒亚。战争激烈，扫罗受到猛烈的攻击，弓箭手发现了他，射箭的人射中了他，他的伤势严重；扫罗就对替他拿兵器的人说：“拔出你的刀来，把我刺透，免得这些未受割礼的人来把我刺透，戏弄我。”但替他拿兵器的人不肯这样作，因为他非常害怕。于是扫罗拿过刀来，自己伏在刀上死了。替他拿兵器的人看见扫罗死了，他也伏在自己的刀上，与扫罗一起死了。

追赶我们的比空中的鹰还快；他们在山上追赶我们，在旷野埋伏攻击我们。

洗鲁雅的三个儿子约押、亚比筛和亚撒黑都在那里。亚撒黑的腿轻快如野地的羚羊一般。

甲薛人耶何耶大的儿子比拿雅，是一个力气很大的人，作过许多大事。他曾经击杀了摩押人的两个勇将；又在下雪的时候，下到坑里去击杀了一只狮子。

约拿单对他说：“绝对没有这事，你必不会死。我父亲作事，无论大小，没有不让我知道的，为什么这事他偏要隐瞒我呢？不会这样的。”

大卫对扫罗说完了话，约拿单的心和大卫的心就深相契合。约拿单爱大卫如同爱自己的命。
