O mountains of Gilboa, may there be no dew or rain on you, nor fields of grain offerings! For it was there that the shield of warriors was defiled; the shield of Saul lies neglected without oil.

You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain on you, and no fields of offerings; For there the shield of the mighty was defiled and cast away, The shield of Saul was not anointed with oil.

Now the Philistines were fighting against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.

They prepare the table, they spread the rugs, they eat, they drink. Arise, O princes; oil the shield!

Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said,“ Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince over his heritage.

I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and briers and thorns shall grow up; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.

Who knows whether he will not turn and relent, and leave a blessing behind him, a grain offering and a drink offering for the Lord your God?

The grain offering and the drink offering are cut off from the house of the Lord. The priests mourn, the ministers of the Lord.

Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa.

The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa.

“ Let the day perish on which I was born, and the night that said,‘ A man is conceived.’Let that day be darkness! May God above not seek it, nor light shine upon it.Let gloom and deep darkness claim it. Let clouds dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.That night— let thick darkness seize it! Let it not rejoice among the days of the year; let it not come into the number of the months.Behold, let that night be barren; let no joyful cry enter it.Let those curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up Leviathan.Let the stars of its dawn be dark; let it hope for light, but have none, nor see the eyelids of the morning,because it did not shut the doors of my mother’s womb, nor hide trouble from my eyes.

“ Curse Meroz, says the angel of the Lord, curse its inhabitants thoroughly, because they did not come to the help of the Lord, to the help of the Lord against the mighty.

Cursed be the day on which I was born! The day when my mother bore me, let it not be blessed!Cursed be the man who brought the news to my father,“ A son is born to you,” making him very glad.Let that man be like the cities that the Lord overthrew without pity; let him hear a cry in the morning and an alarm at noon,

“ Thus says the Lord God: On the day the cedar went down to Sheol I caused mourning; I closed the deep over it, and restrained its rivers, and many waters were stopped. I clothed Lebanon in gloom for it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it.
