既識義道、竟背所受之聖命、莫若不識之為美、

蓋與其知道而背命、孰若初未聞道之為愈乎？

It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.

Suppose they had not known the way of godliness. This would have been better than to know godliness and then turn away from it. The way of godliness is the sacred command passed on to them.

For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.

It would be better if they had never known the way to righteousness than to know it and then reject the command they were given to live a holy life.

To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. (niv)

“ The servant who knows the master’s will and does not get ready or does not do what the master wants will be beaten with many blows. (niv)

So then, the law is holy, and the commandment is holy, righteous and good. (niv)
