后来，加利亚的儿子约哈难在米斯巴私下对基大利说：“让我去杀掉尼探雅的儿子以实玛利吧！没人会知道。何必让他来杀害你，以致汇集到你这里的犹大余民再度分散、灭亡呢？”但亚希甘的儿子基大利说：“你不可杀他，你说他要杀我这件事不是真的。”七月，王室宗亲、犹大王的大臣、以利沙玛的孙子、尼探雅的儿子以实玛利带着十个人去米斯巴见亚希甘的儿子基大利。趁在米斯巴一同吃饭的时候，尼探雅的儿子以实玛利和同来的十个人突然起来拔刀杀了巴比伦王委任管理犹大的沙番的孙子、亚希甘的儿子基大利，还杀了所有在米斯巴与基大利在一起的犹大人和那里的迦勒底士兵。第二天，基大利被杀的事仍无人知道。当天，从示剑、示罗和撒玛利亚来了八十个人，他们剃了胡须，撕裂衣服，割破身体，手里拿着素祭和乳香要去耶和华的殿。以实玛利就从米斯巴出来迎接他们，边走边哭，见面后邀请他们去见亚希甘的儿子基大利。到了城中，以实玛利和部下便屠杀他们，弃尸于蓄水池中。其中有十个人对以实玛利说：“请不要杀我们，我们在田野里藏了许多大麦、小麦、油和蜜。”他就没有杀他们。以实玛利抛尸的地方是个很大的蓄水池，是从前亚撒王为抵御以色列王巴沙而修建的。尼探雅的儿子以实玛利用被杀者的尸体填满了蓄水池。以实玛利还掳去了留在米斯巴的公主和其他人。护卫长尼布撒拉旦曾委任亚希甘的儿子基大利管理这些人。尼探雅的儿子以实玛利带着俘虏前往亚扪。加利亚的儿子约哈难和其他将领听说尼探雅的儿子以实玛利的所作所为，便率领部下去攻打他，在基遍的大水池边追上了他。被以实玛利从米斯巴掳走的人看见约哈难和众将领，喜出望外，都转身投奔约哈难。

亚哈谢的母亲亚她利雅见儿子死了，便决定除掉王室后裔。

“万军之耶和华说，‘四月、五月、七月、十月的禁食必成为犹大家欢喜快乐的日子和幸福的节期。因此，你们要喜爱真理与和平。
