LORD, it is true that the kings of Assyria have devastated the nations and their lands.They have thrown their gods into the fire, for they were not gods but made by human hands— wood and stone. So they have destroyed them.

For he says,“ Aren’t all my commanders kings?Isn’t Calno like Carchemish? Isn’t Hamath like Arpad? Isn’t Samaria like Damascus?As my hand seized the kingdoms of worthless images, kingdoms whose idols exceeded those of Jerusalem and Samaria,and as I did to Samaria and its worthless images will I not also do to Jerusalem and its idols?”

“‘ Don’t you know what I and my predecessors have done to all the peoples of the lands? Have any of the national gods of the lands been able to rescue their land from my power?Who among all the gods of these nations that my predecessors completely destroyed was able to rescue his people from my power, that your God should be able to deliver you from my power?

The king of Assyria invaded the whole land, marched up to Samaria, and besieged it for three years.In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria. He deported the Israelites to Assyria and settled them in Halah, along the Habor( Gozan’s river), and in the cities of the Medes.This disaster happened because the people of Israel sinned against the LORD their God who had brought them out of the land of Egypt from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt and because they worshiped other gods.They lived according to the customs of the nations that the LORD had dispossessed before the Israelites and according to what the kings of Israel did.The Israelites secretly did things against the LORD their God that were not right. They built high places in all their towns from watchtower to fortified city.They set up for themselves sacred pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree.They burned incense there on all the high places just like the nations that the LORD had driven out before them had done. They did evil things, angering the LORD.
