Even while these people were worshiping the Lord, they were serving their idols. To this day their children and grandchildren continue to do as their ancestors did.

They worshiped the Lord. But at the same time, they served the statues of their gods. And to this day their children and grandchildren continue to do what their people before them did.

So while these new residents worshiped the Lord, they also worshiped their idols. And to this day their descendants do the same.

They feared the LORD but also served their idols. Still today, their children and grandchildren continue doing as their ancestors did.

Therefore we also will serve the Lord, for he is our God.”But Joshua said to the people,“ You are not able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God. He is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions or your sins.If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, then he will turn and do you harm and consume you, after having done you good.”

“‘ I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot!So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple to the Lord, the God of Israel,they approached Zerubbabel and the heads of fathers’ houses and said to them,“ Let us build with you, for we worship your God as you do, and we have been sacrificing to him ever since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria who brought us here.”But Zerubbabel, Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers’ houses in Israel said to them,“ You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we alone will build to the Lord, the God of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.”
