through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors;

We serve God in times of glory and shame. We serve him whether the news about us is bad or good. We are true to our calling. But people treat us as if we were pretenders.

through honor and dishonor, through slander and praise. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true;

We serve God whether people honor us or despise us, whether they slander us or praise us. We are honest, but they call us impostors.

And why not say,“ Let us do evil so that good may come of it”?– as some who slander us allege that we say.( Their condemnation is deserved!)

If anyone wants to do God’s will, he will know about my teaching, whether it is from God or whether I speak from my own authority.The person who speaks on his own authority desires to receive honor for himself; the one who desires the honor of the one who sent him is a man of integrity, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

“ Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil things about you falsely on account of me.Rejoice and be glad because your reward is great in heaven, for they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way.

But carefully select from among you, brothers, seven men who are well- attested, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may put in charge of this necessary task.

They sent to him their disciples along with the Herodians, saying,“ Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. You do not court anyone’s favor because you show no partiality.

When the local people saw the creature hanging from Paul’s hand, they said to one another,“ No doubt this man is a murderer! Although he has escaped from the sea, Justice herself has not allowed him to live!”However, Paul shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no harm.But they were expecting that he was going to swell up or suddenly drop dead. So after they had waited a long time and had seen nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.Now in the region around that place were fields belonging to the chief official of the island, named Publius, who welcomed us and entertained us hospitably as guests for three days.The father of Publius lay sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and after praying, placed his hands on him and healed him.After this had happened, many of the people on the island who were sick also came and were healed.They also bestowed many honors, and when we were preparing to sail, they gave us all the supplies we needed.

It is enough for the disciple to become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house‘ Beelzebul,’ how much more will they defame the members of his household!

When they had brought them before the magistrates, they said,“ These men are throwing our city into confusion. They are Jewsand are advocating customs that are not lawful for us to accept or practice, since we are Romans.”The crowd joined the attack against them, and the magistrates tore the clothes off Paul and Silas and ordered them to be beaten with rods.

We are fools for Christ, but you are wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are distinguished, we are dishonored!To the present hour we are hungry and thirsty, poorly clothed, brutally treated, and without a roof over our heads.We do hard work, toiling with our own hands. When we are verbally abused, we respond with a blessing, when persecuted, we endure,when people lie about us, we answer in a friendly manner. We are the world’s dirt and scum, even now.

But we would like to hear from you what you think, for regarding this sect we know that people everywhere speak against it.”

For we have found this man to be a troublemaker, one who stirs up riots among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.

If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory, who is the Spirit of God, rests on you.

In fact this is why we work hard and struggle, because we have set our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of believers.

And he must be well thought of by those outside the faith, so that he may not fall into disgrace and be caught by the devil’s trap.

Listen! I am going to make those people from the synagogue of Satan– who say they are Jews yet are not, but are lying– Look, I will make them come and bow down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you.

and came and apologized to them. After they brought them out, they asked them repeatedly to leave the city.

So when the crowds saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language,“ The gods have come down to us in human form!”They began to call Barnabas Zeus and Paul Hermes, because he was the chief speaker.The priest of the temple of Zeus, located just outside the city, brought bulls and garlands to the city gates; he and the crowds wanted to offer sacrifices to them.But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard about it, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shouting,“ Men, why are you doing these things? We too are men, with human natures just like you! We are proclaiming the good news to you, so that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and everything that is in them.In past generations he allowed all the nations to go their own ways,yet he did not leave himself without a witness by doing good, by giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying you with food and your hearts with joy.”Even by saying these things, they scarcely persuaded the crowds not to offer sacrifice to them.But Jews came from Antioch and Iconium, and after winning the crowds over, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, presuming him to be dead.But after the disciples had surrounded him, he got up and went back into the city. On the next day he left with Barnabas for Derbe.

When they came they said to him,“ Teacher, we know that you are truthful and do not court anyone’s favor, because you show no partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay or shouldn’t we?”

None of the rest dared to join them, but the people held them in high honor.

There was a lot of grumbling about him among the crowds. Some were saying,“ He is a good man,” but others,“ He deceives the common people.”

After threatening them further, they released them, for they could not find how to punish them on account of the people, because they were all praising God for what had happened.

“ A man named Ananias came to see me. He was a devout observer of the law and highly respected by all the Jews living there. (niv)

His speech persuaded them. They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.The apostles left the Sanhedrin, rejoicing because they had been counted worthy of suffering disgrace for the Name. (niv)

Let us, then, go to him outside the camp, bearing the disgrace he bore. (niv)

The men replied,“ We have come from Cornelius the centurion. He is a righteous and God- fearing man, who is respected by all the Jewish people. A holy angel told him to ask you to come to his house so that he could hear what you have to say.” (niv)
