I have previously said when I was present the second time, and though now absent I say in advance to those who have sinned in the past and to all the rest as well, that if I come again I will not spare anyone,

I already gave you a warning when I was with you the second time. I now repeat it while absent: On my return I will not spare those who sinned earlier or any of the others,

I already warned you during my second visit. I now say it again while I’m away. When I return, I won’t spare those who sinned earlier. I won’t spare any of the others either.

I warned those who sinned before and all the others, and I warn them now while absent, as I did when present on my second visit, that if I come again I will not spare them—

For if I boast somewhat more about our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be put to shame,for I do not want to seem as if I would terrify you by my letters.For they say,“ His letters are weighty and strong, but his personal presence is unimpressive and his speech contemptible.”Have such a person consider this, that what we are in word by letters when absent, such persons we are also in deed when present.

Now I, Paul, myself urge you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ— I who am meek when face to face with you, but bold toward you when absent!I ask that when I am present I need not be bold with the confidence with which I intend to be courageous against some, who regard us as if we walked according to the flesh.

For I am afraid that perhaps when I come I may find you to be not what I wish, and may be found by you to be not what you wish; that perhaps there will be strife, jealousy, angry tempers, selfishness, slanders, gossip, arrogance, disturbances;I am afraid that when I come again my God may humiliate me before you, and I may mourn over many of those who have sinned in the past and not repented of the impurity, sexual immorality, and indecent behavior which they have practiced.

But I will come to you soon, if the Lord wills, and I shall find out, not the words of those who are arrogant, but their power.For the kingdom of God is not in words, but in power.What do you desire? That I come to you with a rod, or with love and a spirit of gentleness?

For this reason I am writing these things while absent, so that when present I need not use severity, in accordance with the authority which the Lord gave me for building up and not for tearing down.

I have decided to turn such a person over to Satan for the destruction of his body, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord.
