When Joash was seven years old, Jehoiada showed how strong he was. He made a covenant with the commanders of groups of 100 men. The commanders were Azariah son of Jeroham, Ishmael son of Jehohanan, Azariah son of Obed, Maaseiah son of Adaiah, and Elishaphat son of Zikri.

越至七年、耶何耶大招諸百夫長、與劊役、及趨承者、俱至耶和華殿、使之發誓、與之立約、然後以王子示之、曰、宜聽我言、值安息日、爾眾入此者、當以三分之一、守王子之室、三分之一在蘇耳門、三分之一在趨承者門後、於是殿可以守、民不得擅入。每值安息日、爾眾二隊當出、惟今必在耶和華殿院、環衛王子、各執器械、環王子而侍立、凡侵爾班列者殺之、王子出入、爾必擁護。諸百夫長遵祭司耶何耶大命、各守安息日、所當入與所當出者、俱至祭司所。祭司取耶和華殿所藏大闢之干戈、與諸百夫長、趨承者各執器械、立於王子四周、自殿左至殿右、環祭壇及聖所。祭司扶王子出、戴王冕、執律法之書、遂立為王、沐之以膏、鼓掌呼曰、願王千歲。亞大利聞趨承者與民號呼之聲、則至耶和華殿、民所叢集之處、見王立於臺、循其常例、又見群臣、及吹角者待於王側、角鳴之際、斯土之民歡然欣喜、亞大利乃裂其衣、疾呼曰、爾黨其謀叛乎、爾黨其謀叛乎。祭司耶何耶大命諸百夫長、及統轄全軍者、曰、在耶和華殿勿殺是婦、當曳出班列之外、凡從之者擊以刃。遂曳婦出、至王宮之馬道而殺焉。耶何耶大在耶和華及王與民間立約、使民奉事耶和華、又在王與民間立約。民往燬巴力殿、摧其祭壇、斫其偶像、殺其祭司馬擔於壇前、祭司耶何耶大使有司統轄耶和華殿。自率百夫長、劊役、趨承者、及斯土之民、衛王、自耶和華殿、由趨承者之門、至於王宮、以踐國位。既殺亞大利於王宮之側、民皆忻喜、共享平康。
