‘ This is what the LORD says: You are not to march up and fight against your brothers. Each of you return home, for this incident has come from me.’” So they listened to what the LORD said and turned back from going against Jeroboam.

‘ This is what the Lord says:“ You shall not go up nor fight against your relatives; return, every man, to his house, for this event is from Me.” ’ ” So they listened to the words of the Lord and returned from going against Jeroboam.

‘ Thus says the Lord:“ You shall not go up or fight against your brethren! Let every man return to his house, for this thing is from Me.”’” Therefore they obeyed the words of the Lord, and turned back from attacking Jeroboam.

You have killed them so mercilessly that God has taken notice.And now you are planning to enslave the people of Judah and Jerusalem. Yet are you not also guilty before the LORD your God?Now listen to me! Send back those you have seized from your brothers, for the LORD is very angry at you!”So some of the Ephraimite family leaders, Azariah son of Jehochanan, Berechiah son of Meshillemoth, Jechizkiah son of Shallum, and Amasa son of Hadlai confronted those returning from the battle.They said to them,“ Don’t bring those captives here! Are you planning on making us even more sinful and guilty before the LORD? Our guilt is already great and the LORD is very angry at Israel.”So the soldiers released the captives and the plunder before the officials and the entire assembly.Men were assigned to take the prisoners and find clothes among the plunder for those who were naked. So they clothed them, supplied them with sandals, gave them food and drink, and provided them with oil to rub on their skin. They put the ones who couldn’t walk on donkeys. They brought them back to their brothers at Jericho, the city of the date palm trees, and then returned to Samaria.

The king refused to listen to the people, because God was instigating this turn of events so that he might bring to pass the prophetic announcement he had made through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, the people answered the king,“ We have no portion in David– no share in the son of Jesse! Return to your homes, O Israel! Now, look after your own dynasty, O David!” So all Israel returned to their homes.

But a prophet visited him and said:“ O king, the Israelite troops must not go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel or any of the Ephraimites.Even if you go and fight bravely in battle, God will defeat you before the enemy. God is capable of helping or defeating.”Amaziah asked the prophet:“ But what should I do about the hundred talents of silver I paid the Israelite troops?” The prophet replied,“ The LORD is capable of giving you more than that.”So Amaziah dismissed the troops that had come to him from Ephraim and sent them home. They were very angry at Judah and returned home incensed.

As for you, you meant to harm me, but God intended it for a good purpose, so he could preserve the lives of many people, as you can see this day.

At that time, when Jeroboam had left Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite met him on the road; the two of them were alone in the open country. Ahijah was wearing a brand new robe,and he grabbed the robe and tore it into twelve pieces.Then he told Jeroboam,“ Take ten pieces, for this is what the LORD God of Israel says:‘ Look, I am about to tear the kingdom from Solomon’s hand and I will give ten tribes to you.He will retain one tribe, for my servant David’s sake and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.I am taking the kingdom from him because they have abandoned me and worshiped the Sidonian goddess Astarte, the Moabite god Chemosh, and the Ammonite god Milcom. They have not followed my instructions by doing what I approve and obeying my rules and regulations, like Solomon’s father David did.I will not take the whole kingdom from his hand. I will allow him to be ruler for the rest of his life for the sake of my chosen servant David who kept my commandments and rules.I will take the kingdom from the hand of his son and give ten tribes to you.I will leave his son one tribe so my servant David’s dynasty may continue to serve me in Jerusalem, the city I have chosen as my home.I will select you; you will rule over all you desire to have and you will be king over Israel.You must obey all I command you to do, follow my instructions, do what I approve, and keep my rules and commandments, like my servant David did. Then I will be with you and establish for you a lasting dynasty, as I did for David; I will give you Israel.

The LORD’s decisions stand forever; his plans abide throughout the ages.

Then Abner called out to Joab,“ Must the sword devour forever? Don’t you realize that this will turn bitter in the end? When will you tell the people to turn aside from pursuing their brothers?”

Finally, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, affectionate, compassionate, and humble.

I say this to your shame! Is there no one among you wise enough to settle disputes between fellow Christians?Instead, does a Christian sue a Christian, and do this before unbelievers?The fact that you have lawsuits among yourselves demonstrates that you have already been defeated. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?But you yourselves wrong and cheat, and you do this to your brothers and sisters!

As the sun was setting, a cry went through the camp,“ Each one should return to his city and to his homeland.”
