Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime.“ How would you advise me to answer these people?” he asked.

Then King Rehoboam asked the elders for advice. They had served his father Solomon while he was still living. Rehoboam asked them,“ What advice can you give me? How should I answer these people?”

The way of a fool is right in his own eyes; But he that is wise hearkeneth unto counsel.

Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not, speak thou.

For inquire, I pray thee, of the former age, And apply thyself to that which their fathers have searched out( For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, Because our days upon earth are a shadow);

Thine own friend, and thy father’s friend, forsake not; And go not to thy brother’s house in the day of thy calamity: Better is a neighbor that is near than a brother far off.

With aged men is wisdom, And in length of days understanding.With God is wisdom and might; He hath counsel and understanding.

Then said Absalom to Ahithophel, Give your counsel what we shall do.

Hear counsel, and receive instruction, That thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.
