They said to him,“ You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have.”

They said to him,“ You are old. Your sons don’t live as you do. So appoint a king to lead us. We want a king just like the kings all the other nations have.”

and said to him,“ Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint for us a king to judge us like all the nations.”

“ Look,” they told him,“ you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have.”

They said to him,“ Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Therefore, appoint a king to judge us the same as all the other nations have.”

and they said to him,“ Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint us a king to judge us like all the nations.”

and said to him,“ Look, you are old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”

and they said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

They said to him,“ Look, you are old, and your sons do not follow your example. Therefore, appoint a king to judge us the same as all the other nations have.”

此後，他們要求立一個王，神就把便雅憫支派的一個人，基士的兒子掃羅給他們為王，共四十年。

然而，民眾不肯聽從撒母耳的話，他們說：「不，必須有一個王來統治我們！我們也要像其他國家那樣，有自己的王治理我們，率領我們出征，為我們作戰。」

今日不是收割小麥的時候嗎？我向耶和華呼求，他就會降下雷雨。這樣你們就會知道並看見你們為自己要求一個王，在耶和華眼中是行了極大的惡事！」

他們說「請為我們立一個王來治理我們」，這話讓撒母耳很愁煩，他就向耶和華禱告。耶和華對撒母耳說：「你就聽從民眾對你說的一切話。其實他們不是厭棄你，而是厭棄我作他們的王。自從我帶他們出埃及的那天起直到今日，他們離棄我，服事別的神明——他們怎樣對我做這一切，現在也怎樣對你做。
