早上法老心中不安，就派人召來埃及所有的術士和博學之士，把夢告訴他們，可是沒有一個人能為他解夢。

法老召他的謀士和巫師前來，這些人是埃及的術士，他們也用邪術如法炮製。

他大聲傳令，召來巫師、占星家和占卜者，對這些巴比倫的智者說：「誰能讀牆上的字，把意思告訴我，他必身穿紫袍，頸戴金鏈，在國中位居第三。」

便派人召來術士、巫師、行法術的和占星家，為他解夢。他們都來到王面前。

我要拿什麼朝見耶和華，在天上的上帝面前叩拜呢？要獻上一歲的牛犢作燔祭嗎？耶和華會喜愛成千的公羊和萬條油河嗎？我要因過犯而獻上自己的長子，因心中的罪惡而獻上親生的骨肉嗎？世人啊，耶和華已經指示你們何為良善。祂向你們所要的是什麼呢？是要你們行公義，好憐憫，謙卑地與你們的上帝同行。耶和華在向耶路撒冷呼喊，智者必敬畏祂的名。祂說：「聚在城裡的眾人啊，你們要聽！

希律王就召來祭司長和律法教師，問他們：「基督在哪裡降生呢？」

「你自幼就勤練符咒和五花八門的邪術，繼續施展吧！也許會有用處，也許會令人害怕。眾多的計謀使你疲憊不堪，讓那些觀天象、每月說預言的占星家來救你脫離將臨的災禍吧！

耶和華啊，你離棄了你的子民——雅各的後裔，因為他們當中充滿了東方的惡俗，像非利士人一樣占卜，跟外族人同流合污。
