此後，大衛問耶和華說：「我上猶大的一個城去可以嗎？」耶和華說：「可以。」大衛說：「我上哪一個城去呢？」耶和華說：「上希伯崙去。」

猶大人來到希伯崙，在那裏膏大衛作猶大家的王。有人告訴大衛說：「葬埋掃羅的是基列‧雅比人。」

於是約書亞為耶孚尼的兒子迦勒祝福，將希伯崙給他為業。所以希伯崙作了基尼洗族耶孚尼的兒子迦勒的產業，直到今日，因為他專心跟從耶和華－以色列的神。希伯崙從前名叫基列‧亞巴；亞巴是亞衲族中最尊大的人。於是國中太平，沒有爭戰了。

押沙龍打發探子走遍以色列各支派，說：「你們一聽見角聲就說：『押沙龍在希伯崙作王了！』」

掃羅的兒子伊施波設聽見押尼珥死在希伯崙，手就發軟；以色列眾人也都驚惶。
