The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your priestly house, so that no one in it will reach old age,

The time is coming when I will cut your life short. I will also cut short the lives of those in your family line of priests. No one in your family line will grow old.

The time is coming when I will put an end to your family, so it will no longer serve as my priests. All the members of your family will die before their time. None will reach old age.

And when the man came into the city and told it, all the city cried out.When Eli heard the noise of the outcry, he said,“ What does the sound of this tumult mean?” And the man came quickly and told Eli.Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were so dim that he could not see.Then the man said to Eli,“ I am he who came from the battle. And I fled today from the battle line.” And he said,“ What happened, my son?”So the messenger answered and said,“ Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has been a great slaughter among the people. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead; and the ark of God has been captured.”Then it happened, when he made mention of the ark of God, that Eli fell off the seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck was broken and he died, for the man was old and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.Now his daughter-in-law, Phinehas’ wife, was with child, due to be delivered; and when she heard the news that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and gave birth, for her labor pains came upon her.And about the time of her death the women who stood by her said to her,“ Do not fear, for you have borne a son.” But she did not answer, nor did she regard it.

Ahijah the son of Ahitub, Ichabod’s brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD’s priest in Shiloh, was wearing an ephod. But the people did not know that Jonathan had gone.

“ Son of man, I have broken the arm of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and see, it has not been bandaged for healing, nor a splint put on to bind it, to make it strong enough to hold a sword.Therefore thus says the Lord God:‘ Surely I am against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and will break his arms, both the strong one and the one that was broken; and I will make the sword fall out of his hand.I will scatter the Egyptians among the nations, and disperse them throughout the countries.I will strengthen the arms of the king of Babylon and put My sword in his hand; but I will break Pharaoh’s arms, and he will groan before him with the groanings of a mortally wounded man.

The king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his place over the army, and the king put Zadok the priest in the place of Abiathar.

You have sent widows away empty, And the strength of the fatherless was crushed.

“ And the Levites who went far from Me, when Israel went astray, who strayed away from Me after their idols, they shall bear their iniquity.

And to Abiathar the priest the king said,“ Go to Anathoth, to your own fields, for you are deserving of death; but I will not put you to death at this time, because you carried the ark of the Lord GOD before my father David, and because you were afflicted every time my father was afflicted.”So Solomon removed Abiathar from being priest to the Lord, that he might fulfill the word of the Lord which He spoke concerning the house of Eli at Shiloh.
