众人来到耶路撒冷神的殿以后，第二年二月，撒拉铁的儿子所罗巴伯、约萨达的儿子耶书亚和他们其余的兄弟，就是祭司、利未人和所有从被掳之地回到耶路撒冷的人，就开始动工建造；又委派二十岁以上的利未人，监督耶和华殿的工程。耶书亚和他的儿子及兄弟，甲篾和他的儿子，就是何达威雅的子孙（“何达威雅的子孙”或译：“犹大人”），同心协力监督建造神殿的工人，有利未人希拿达的儿子和兄弟协助他们。建筑工人奠立耶和华殿根基的时候，祭司都穿上礼服，拿着号筒，亚萨子孙的利未人，都拿着响钹，站在自己的位置，按照以色列王大卫所定的仪式赞美耶和华。他们赞美和称谢，向耶和华歌唱，说：“耶和华是至善的，他向以色列人所施的慈爱永远长存。”他们赞美耶和华的时候，众人都大声呼喊，因为耶和华殿的根基已经奠定。很多年老的祭司、利未人和族长，曾经见过先前的殿，眼见这殿的根基再次奠立，就放声大哭，但也有许多人高声欢呼，以致分不清到底是欢呼声或哭声。因为众人都大声呼喊，这声音在很远的地方也可以听见。

所罗门为自己建造宫殿花了十三年才完成。

犹大人的长老因着哈该先知和易多的孙子撒迦利亚的信息，迅速重建。他们遵照以色列神的命令，波斯王古列、大利乌和亚达薛西的命令，完成重建圣殿的工作。这殿在大利乌王在位的第六年亚达月初三日，完成了。

犹太人说：“这殿建了四十六年，你三天之内就能把它建造起来吗？”

他必建造耶和华的殿，必得尊荣；他必坐在宝座上执掌王权，又必在他的宝座上作祭司，使两者之间和谐共济。’”这冠冕要在耶和华的殿中给希连（“希连”有古译本作“黑玳”）、多比雅、耶大雅和西番雅的儿子贤（“贤”有古译本作“约西亚”）作记念。远方的人也要来建造耶和华的殿，你们就知道万军之耶和华差遣了我到你们这里来。你们若留心听从耶和华你们神的话，这事必定成就。

以色列人出埃及地以后四百八十年，所罗门作以色列王的第四年西弗月，就是二月，他动工建造耶和华的殿。
