So they put on burlap and ropes, and they went to the king of Israel and begged,“ Your servant Ben hadad says,‘ Please let me live!’” The king of Israel responded,“ Is he still alive? He is my brother!”

遂束麻於腰、繫索於首、詣以色列王曰、爾僕便哈達云、請存我命、曰、彼尚在乎、我兄弟也、

遂衣麻於身。繫索於項、至以色列王前曰、爾臣便哈達云、請宥我命、曰、我兄弟尚在乎。

遂腰束麻、項繫繩、至以色列王前、曰、王之僕便哈達云、求王存我命、曰、彼若尚存、我必以兄相待、

Wearing sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said,“ Your servant Ben-Hadad says:‘ Please let me live.’” The king answered,“ Is he still alive? He is my brother.”

So they wore rough clothing. They tied ropes around their heads. Then they went to the king of Israel. They told him,“ Your servant Ben- Hadad says,‘ Please let me live.’ ” The king answered,“ Is he still alive? He used to be my friend.”

So they tied sackcloth around their waists and put ropes on their heads and went to the king of Israel and said,“ Your servant Ben-hadad says,‘ Please, let me live.’” And he said,“ Does he still live? He is my brother.”

So they dressed with sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, went to the king of Israel, and said,“ Your servant Ben-hadad says,‘ Please spare my life.’” So he said,“ Is he still alive? He is my brother.”

So they put sackcloth around their waists and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel and said,“ Your servant Ben hadad says,‘ Please let me live.’ ” And Ahab said,“ Is he still alive? He is my brother.”

So they girded sackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said, Thy servant Ben- hadad saith, I pray thee, let me live. And he said, Is he yet alive? he is my brother.

So they dressed with sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, went to the king of Israel, and said,“ Your servant Ben-hadad says,‘ Please spare my life.’” So he said,“ Is he still alive? He is my brother.”

So they put sackcloth on their bodies and ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Israel, and said,“ Your servant Ben Hadad says,‘ Please let me live.’” He said,“ Is he still alive? He is my brother.”

‘ Your silver and gold are mine, and so are your wives and the best of your children!’”“ All right, my lord the king,” Israel’s king replied.“ All that I have is yours!”Soon Ben hadad’s messengers returned again and said,“ This is what Ben hadad says:‘ I have already demanded that you give me your silver, gold, wives, and children.But about this time tomorrow I will send my officials to search your palace and the homes of your officials. They will take away everything you consider valuable!’”

Human pride will be brought down, and human arrogance will be humbled. Only the Lord will be exalted on that day of judgment.For the Lord of Heaven’s Armies has a day of reckoning. He will punish the proud and mighty and bring down everything that is exalted.

But when his heart and mind were puffed up with arrogance, he was brought down from his royal throne and stripped of his glory.He was driven from human society. He was given the mind of a wild animal, and he lived among the wild donkeys. He ate grass like a cow, and he was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he learned that the Most High God rules over the kingdoms of the world and appoints anyone he desires to rule over them.“ You are his successor, O Belshazzar, and you knew all this, yet you have not humbled yourself.For you have proudly defied the Lord of heaven and have had these cups from his Temple brought before you. You and your nobles and your wives and concubines have been drinking wine from them while praising gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone— gods that neither see nor hear nor know anything at all. But you have not honored the God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny!

You have been deceived by your own pride because you live in a rock fortress and make your home high in the mountains.‘ Who can ever reach us way up here?’ you ask boastfully.But even if you soar as high as eagles and build your nest among the stars, I will bring you crashing down,” says the Lord.

The prophet said to him,“ This is what the Lord says: Because you have spared the man I said must be destroyed, now you must die in his place, and your people will die instead of his people.”

He captured Agag, the Amalekite king, but completely destroyed everyone else.Saul and his men spared Agag’s life and kept the best of the sheep and goats, the cattle, the fat calves, and the lambs— everything, in fact, that appealed to them. They destroyed only what was worthless or of poor quality.Then the Lord said to Samuel,“ I am sorry that I ever made Saul king, for he has not been loyal to me and has refused to obey my command.” Samuel was so deeply moved when he heard this that he cried out to the Lord all night.Early the next morning Samuel went to find Saul. Someone told him,“ Saul went to the town of Carmel to set up a monument to himself; then he went on to Gilgal.”When Samuel finally found him, Saul greeted him cheerfully.“ May the Lord bless you,” he said.“ I have carried out the Lord’s command!”“ Then what is all the bleating of sheep and goats and the lowing of cattle I hear?” Samuel demanded.“ It’s true that the army spared the best of the sheep, goats, and cattle,” Saul admitted.“ But they are going to sacrifice them to the Lord your God. We have destroyed everything else.”Then Samuel said to Saul,“ Stop! Listen to what the Lord told me last night!”“ What did he tell you?” Saul asked.And Samuel told him,“ Although you may think little of yourself, are you not the leader of the tribes of Israel? The Lord has anointed you king of Israel.And the Lord sent you on a mission and told you,‘ Go and completely destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, until they are all dead.’Why haven’t you obeyed the Lord? Why did you rush for the plunder and do what was evil in the Lord’s sight?”“ But I did obey the Lord,” Saul insisted.“ I carried out the mission he gave me. I brought back King Agag, but I destroyed everyone else.

Give vent to your anger. Let it overflow against the proud.Humiliate the proud with a glance; walk on the wicked where they stand.

After the Lord has used the king of Assyria to accomplish his purposes on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, he will turn against the king of Assyria and punish him— for he is proud and arrogant.

He leads counselors away, stripped of good judgment; wise judges become fools.He removes the royal robe of kings. They are led away with ropes around their waist.

Ben hadad’s officers said to him,“ Sir, we have heard that the kings of Israel are merciful. So let’s humble ourselves by wearing burlap around our waists and putting ropes on our heads, and surrender to the king of Israel. Then perhaps he will let you live.”
