After a long time, the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year:“ Go and present yourself to Ahab. I will send rain on the surface of the land.”

After a long time, in the third year, the word of the Lord came to Elijah:“ Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.”

It was now three years since it had rained. A message came to Elijah from the Lord. He said,“ Go. Speak to Ahab. Then I will send rain on the land.”

After many days the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying,“ Go, show yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain upon the earth.”

Later on, in the third year of the drought, the Lord said to Elijah,“ Go and present yourself to King Ahab. Tell him that I will soon send rain!”

Now it happened after many days that the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying,“ Go, present yourself to Ahab, and I will provide rain on the face of the earth.”

And it came to pass after many days that the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying,“ Go, present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the earth.”

And it came to pass after many days, that the word of Jehovah came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, Go, show thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth.

After a long time, the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year:“ Go and present yourself to Ahab. I will send rain on the surface of the land.”

Some time later, in the third year of the famine, the LORD told Elijah,“ Go, make an appearance before Ahab, so I may send rain on the surface of the ground.”

After many days, Yahweh’s word came to Elijah, in the third year, saying,“ Go, show yourself to Ahab; and I will send rain on the earth.”

But I say to you, there were certainly many widows in Israel in Elijah’s days, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months while a great famine came over all the land.

Elijah was a human being as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the land.

The LORD will open for you his abundant storehouse, the sky, to give your land rain in its season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow.

Now Elijah the Tishbite, from the Gilead settlers, said to Ahab,“ As the LORD God of Israel lives, in whose presence I stand, there will be no dew or rain during these years except by my command!”

I will give you rain at the right time, and the land will yield its produce, and the trees of the field will bear their fruit.

I will make it a wasteland. It will not be pruned or weeded; thorns and briers will grow up. I will also give orders to the clouds that rain should not fall on it.

Can any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain? Or can the skies alone give showers? Are you not the LORD our God? We therefore put our hope in you, for you have done all these things.

Children of Zion, rejoice and be glad in the LORD your God, because he gives you the autumn rain for your vindication. He sends showers for you, both autumn and spring rain as before.

So she proceeded to do according to the word of Elijah. Then the woman, Elijah, and her household ate for many days.

So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria.

Then Elijah said,“ As the LORD of Armies lives, in whose presence I stand, today I will present myself to Ahab.”Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him. Then Ahab went to meet Elijah.When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him,“ Is that you, the one ruining Israel?”He replied,“ I have not ruined Israel, but you and your father’s family have, because you have abandoned the LORD’s commands and followed the Baals.Now summon all Israel to meet me at Mount Carmel, along with the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel’s table.”So Ahab summoned all the Israelites and gathered the prophets at Mount Carmel.Then Elijah approached all the people and said,“ How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him. But if Baal, follow him.” But the people didn’t answer him a word.Then Elijah said to the people,“ I am the only remaining prophet of the LORD, but Baal’s prophets are 450 men.Let two bulls be given to us. They are to choose one bull for themselves, cut it in pieces, and place it on the wood but not light the fire. I will prepare the other bull and place it on the wood but not light the fire.Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The God who answers with fire, he is God.” All the people answered,“ That’s fine.”Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal,“ Since you are so numerous, choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first. Then call on the name of your god but don’t light the fire.”So they took the bull that he gave them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying,“ Baal, answer us!” But there was no sound; no one answered. Then they danced around the altar they had made.At noon Elijah mocked them. He said,“ Shout loudly, for he’s a god! Maybe he’s thinking it over; maybe he has wandered away; or maybe he’s on the road. Perhaps he’s sleeping and will wake up!”They shouted loudly, and cut themselves with knives and spears, according to their custom, until blood gushed over them.All afternoon they kept on raving until the offering of the evening sacrifice, but there was no sound; no one answered, no one paid attention.Then Elijah said to all the people,“ Come near me.” So all the people approached him. Then he repaired the LORD’s altar that had been torn down:Elijah took twelve stones— according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying,“ Israel will be your name”—and he built an altar with the stones in the name of the LORD. Then he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold about four gallons.Next, he arranged the wood, cut up the bull, and placed it on the wood. He said,“ Fill four water pots with water and pour it on the offering to be burned and on the wood.”Then he said,“ A second time!” and they did it a second time. And then he said,“ A third time!” and they did it a third time.So the water ran all around the altar; he even filled the trench with water.At the time for offering the evening sacrifice, the prophet Elijah approached the altar and said,“ LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, today let it be known that you are God in Israel and I am your servant, and that at your word I have done all these things.Answer me, LORD! Answer me so that this people will know that you, the LORD, are God and that you have turned their hearts back.”Then the LORD’s fire fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.When all the people saw it, they fell facedown and said,“ The LORD, he is God! The LORD, he is God!”Then Elijah ordered them,“ Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let even one of them escape.” So they seized them, and Elijah brought them down to the Wadi Kishon and slaughtered them there.

When he thunders, the waters in the heavens are in turmoil, and he causes the clouds to rise from the ends of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain and brings the wind from his storehouses.

After a while, the wadi dried up because there had been no rain in the land.

You visit the earth and water it abundantly, enriching it greatly. God’s stream is filled with water, for you prepare the earth in this way, providing people with grain.You soften it with showers and bless its growth, soaking its furrows and leveling its ridges.You crown the year with your goodness; your carts overflow with plenty.The wilderness pastures overflow, and the hills are robed with joy.The pastures are clothed with flocks and the valleys covered with grain. They shout in triumph; indeed, they sing.

They have authority to close up the sky so that it does not rain during the days of their prophecy. They also have power over the waters to turn them into blood and to strike the earth with every plague whenever they want.

I also withheld the rain from you while there were still three months until harvest. I sent rain on one city but no rain on another. One field received rain while a field with no rain withered.

But exclude the courtyard outside the temple. Don’t measure it, because it is given to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months.
