亚撒在位第三十六年，以色列王巴沙上来攻打犹大，修筑拉玛，不许人离开或进入犹大王亚撒的国境。于是亚撒从耶和华的殿和王宫的库房里取出金银来，送给住在大马士革的亚兰王便．哈达，说：“你父亲和我父亲曾经立约，你和我也要立约。现在我把金银送给你，请你去废除你和以色列王巴沙订立的约，好使他离开我而去。”便．哈达听从了亚撒王的话，就派遣他属下的众军长去攻击以色列的城市，他们攻陷了以云、但、亚伯．玛音和拿弗他利一切贮藏货物的城市。巴沙听见了，就停止修筑拉玛，把工程都停止了。于是亚撒王带领犹大众人，把巴沙修筑拉玛所用的石头和木材都搬走，用来修筑迦巴和米斯巴。

以萨迦家族亚希雅的儿子巴沙密谋背叛拿答。拿答和以色列众人正在围攻非利士地的基比顿的时候，巴沙在基比顿把拿答杀了。

全以色列的祭司和利未人，都从各地来归向罗波安。利未人放弃了他们的草场和产业，来到犹大和耶路撒冷，是因为耶罗波安和他的儿子排斥他们，不准他们作祭司事奉耶和华。耶罗波安为邱坛、公山羊神，以及他铸造的牛犊，自己设立了祭司。以色列众支派中所有定意寻求耶和华以色列的神的，都随着利未人来到耶路撒冷，向耶和华他们列祖的神献祭。这样，他们就加强了犹大国的势力，使所罗门的儿子罗波安强盛了三年，因为他们在这三年，跟随了大卫和所罗门的道路。

耶和华这样说：“在拉玛听见有声音，是痛哭哀号的声音；拉结为她的儿女哀哭，不肯受安慰，因为他们都不在了。”

后来撒母耳回拉玛去，扫罗也上他所住的基比亚自己的家去了。
