王便起誓說：『我指着那贖救我性命脫離一切患難的永活永恆主來起誓；

王發誓云、我指援我生命、脫於諸難、維生之耶和華而誓、

王發誓曰、昔我指以色列族之上帝耶和華、與爾發誓、言爾子所羅門必即我位、繼我為王、今我亦指援我於患難中之耶和華而發誓、必如是以行。

The king then took an oath:“ As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble,

The afflictions of the righteous are many, But the Lord rescues him from them all.He protects all his bones, Not one of them is broken.Evil will bring death to the wicked, And those who hate the righteous will suffer for their guilt.The Lord redeems the souls of His servants, And none of those who take refuge in Him will suffer for their guilt.

Saul listened to the voice of Jonathan, and Saul vowed,“ As the Lord lives, David shall not be put to death.”

But the people said to Saul,“ Must Jonathan die, he who has brought about this great victory in Israel? Far from it! As the Lord lives, not even a hair of his head shall fall to the ground, because he has worked with God this day.” So the people rescued Jonathan and he did not die.

Now then, as the Lord lives, who has established me and set me on the throne of David my father, and has made me a house just as He promised, Adonijah certainly shall be put to death today!”
