耶穌曰：『首云、義塞其諦聽、爾上主天主為唯一主宰。爾當盡爾之心、盡爾之情、盡爾之知、盡爾之力、以愛爾所天之主。次則愛人如己。誡無重於此者。』經生曰：『旨哉夫子之言乎！天主惟一、此外無他。誠能盡心盡知盡力以愛之、又復愛人如己、則勝於一切燔牲祀祭多矣。』耶穌見其言具智慧、曰：『天主之國、距爾匪遙。』自此更無人敢加質難焉。

對曰：『「盡爾之心、盡爾之情、盡爾之知、以愛爾上主天主。」斯誡乃首而大者。其次即「愛人如己」是已。此二誡者、實為所有律法及先知書之綱領也。』

今兄弟等已蒙召而獲自由矣惟勿以自由為名、而行其放縱恣肆之實；務望以仁愛之精神、而彼此互相服務也。蓋全部律法、一言以蔽之、曰：「愛鄰如己。」

經云：『爾當愛人如己。』爾能守此王法、則庶幾矣。若一味偏心、妄分厚薄、是即犯罪、不容於法。守全法而犯一誡者、亦為犯法。蓋誡爾毋犯姦淫者、天主也；而誡爾毋殺人者、亦天主也。爾即未犯姦淫、而犯殺人、是亦犯法而已矣。爾之言語行動、均須以自由之法為圭臬。
