My defense to those who examine me is this:

This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me.

That is what I say to stand up for myself when people judge me.

If anyone thinks that he is a prophet or spiritual, let him recognize that the things which I write to you are the Lord’s commandment.

since you are seeking proof of the Christ who speaks in me, who is not weak toward you, but mighty in you.

You are looking at things as they are outwardly. If anyone is confident in himself that he is Christ’s, have him consider this again within himself, that just as he is Christ’s, so too are we.For if I boast somewhat more about our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not for destroying you, I will not be put to shame,

Titus did not take any advantage of you, did he? Did we not conduct ourselves in the same spirit and walk in the same steps?All this time you have been thinking that we are defending ourselves to you. Actually, it is in the sight of God that we have been speaking in Christ; and all for building you up, beloved.

I replied to them that it is not the custom of the Romans to hand over any person before the accused meets his accusers face to face, and has an opportunity to make his defense against the charges.

“ Brothers and fathers, hear my defense which I now offer to you.”

the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives, thinking that they are causing me distress in my imprisonment.

Test yourselves to see if you are in the faith; examine yourselves! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you— unless indeed you fail the test?

At my first defense no one supported me, but all deserted me; may it not be counted against them.
