I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people.

吾意乃謂苟有自名為吾道中人、而猶淫亂、慳吝、迷信、慢罵、狂飲、勒索、誅求也、若此之人、應羞與為伍、雖拒與同席可也。

Stay away from anyone who gets drunk or who cheats. Don’t even eat with people like these.

But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler— not even to eat with such a one.

But as it is, I wrote to you not to associate with anyone who is called a brother who is a sexual sinner, or covetous, or an idolater, or a slanderer, or a drunkard, or an extortionist. Don’t even eat with such a person.

And now, dear brothers and sisters, we give you this command in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ: Stay away from all believers who live idle lives and don’t follow the tradition they received from us.

And now I make one more appeal, my dear brothers and sisters. Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them.

If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the church. Then if he or she won’t accept the church’s decision, treat that person as a pagan or a corrupt tax collector.

Take note of those who refuse to obey what we say in this letter. Stay away from them so they will be ashamed.

God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say,“ You must remove the evil person from among you.”

Outside the city are the dogs— the sorcerers, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idol worshipers, and all who love to live a lie.

I can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on among you— something that even pagans don’t do. I am told that a man in your church is living in sin with his stepmother.You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame. And you should remove this man from your fellowship.Even though I am not with you in person, I am with you in the Spirit. And as though I were there, I have already passed judgment on this manin the name of the Lord Jesus. You must call a meeting of the church. I will be present with you in spirit, and so will the power of our Lord Jesus.Then you must throw this man out and hand him over to Satan so that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be saved on the day the Lord returns.Your boasting about this is terrible. Don’t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough?Get rid of the old“ yeast” by removing this wicked person from among you. Then you will be like a fresh batch of dough made without yeast, which is what you really are. Christ, our Passover Lamb, has been sacrificed for us.So let us celebrate the festival, not with the old bread of wickedness and evil, but with the new bread of sincerity and truth.When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin.But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that.

When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures,idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division,envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

“ But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liars— their fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder,adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness.All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.”

He must not be a heavy drinker or be violent. He must be gentle, not quarrelsome, and not love money.

Night is the time when people sleep and drinkers get drunk.But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation.

or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people— none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God.

Because we belong to the day, we must live decent lives for all to see. Don’t participate in the darkness of wild parties and drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living, or in quarreling and jealousy.

“ But I have this complaint against you. You are permitting that woman— that Jezebel who calls herself a prophet— to lead my servants astray. She teaches them to commit sexual sin and to eat food offered to idols.

Then he said,“ Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.”Then he told them a story:“ A rich man had a fertile farm that produced fine crops.He said to himself,‘ What should I do? I don’t have room for all my crops.’Then he said,‘ I know! I’ll tear down my barns and build bigger ones. Then I’ll have room enough to store all my wheat and other goods.And I’ll sit back and say to myself,“ My friend, you have enough stored away for years to come. Now take it easy! Eat, drink, and be merry!”’“ But God said to him,‘ You fool! You will die this very night. Then who will get everything you worked for?’“ Yes, a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth but not have a rich relationship with God.”Then, turning to his disciples, Jesus said,“ That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life— whether you have enough food to eat or enough clothes to wear.For life is more than food, and your body more than clothing.Look at the ravens. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for God feeds them. And you are far more valuable to him than any birds!Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?And if worry can’t accomplish a little thing like that, what’s the use of worrying over bigger things?“ Look at the lilies and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are.And if God cares so wonderfully for flowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith?“ And don’t be concerned about what to eat and what to drink. Don’t worry about such things.These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers all over the world, but your Father already knows your needs.Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and he will give you everything you need.

But instead, one believer sues another— right in front of unbelievers!

“ What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy— full of greed and self indulgence!

They commit adultery with their eyes, and their desire for sin is never satisfied. They lure unstable people into sin, and they are well trained in greed. They live under God’s curse.They have wandered off the right road and followed the footsteps of Balaam son of Beor, who loved to earn money by doing wrong.

There are hired murderers, loan racketeers, and extortioners everywhere. They never even think of me and my commands, says the Sovereign Lord.

“ Watch out! Don’t let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware,

So, my dear friends, flee from the worship of idols.

or worship idols as some of them did. As the Scriptures say,“ The people celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.”And we must not engage in sexual immorality as some of them did, causing 23,000 of them to die in one day.

Think about the people of Israel. Weren’t they united by eating the sacrifices at the altar?What am I trying to say? Am I saying that food offered to idols has some significance, or that idols are real gods?No, not at all. I am saying that these sacrifices are offered to demons, not to God. And I don’t want you to participate with demons.You cannot drink from the cup of the Lord and from the cup of demons, too. You cannot eat at the Lord’s Table and at the table of demons, too.What? Do we dare to rouse the Lord’s jealousy? Do you think we are stronger than he is?

But God says to the wicked:“ Why bother reciting my decrees and pretending to obey my covenant?For you refuse my discipline and treat my words like trash.When you see thieves, you approve of them, and you spend your time with adulterers.Your mouth is filled with wickedness, and your tongue is full of lies.You sit around and slander your brother— your own mother’s son.While you did all this, I remained silent, and you thought I didn’t care. But now I will rebuke you, listing all my charges against you.

I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors. I will not endure conceit and pride.

and he begins beating the other servants, partying, and getting drunk?The master will return unannounced and unexpected,and he will cut the servant to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

So because of your superior knowledge, a weak believer for whom Christ died will be destroyed.

So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

These people always cause trouble. Their minds are corrupt, and they have turned their backs on the truth. To them, a show of godliness is just a way to become wealthy.

But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction.For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer:‘ I thank you, God, that I am not like other people— cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector!

( But if the husband or wife who isn’t a believer insists on leaving, let them go. In such cases the believing husband or wife is no longer bound to the other, for God has called you to live in peace.)

For they brag about their evil desires; they praise the greedy and curse the Lord.

For some of you hurry to eat your own meal without sharing with others. As a result, some go hungry while others get drunk.

For I am afraid that when I come I won’t like what I find, and you won’t like my response. I am afraid that I will find quarreling, jealousy, anger, selfishness, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorderly behavior.Yes, I am afraid that when I come again, God will humble me in your presence. And I will be grieved because many of you have not given up your old sins. You have not repented of your impurity, sexual immorality, and eagerness for lustful pleasure.

So Ananias went and found Saul. He laid his hands on him and said,“ Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road, has sent me so that you might regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

God’s will is for you to be holy, so stay away from all sexual sin.Then each of you will control his own body and live in holiness and honor—not in lustful passion like the pagans who do not know God and his ways.Never harm or cheat a fellow believer in this matter by violating his wife, for the Lord avenges all such sins, as we have solemnly warned you before.God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives.Therefore, anyone who refuses to live by these rules is not disobeying human teaching but is rejecting God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.

“ But I have a few complaints against you. You tolerate some among you whose teaching is like that of Balaam, who showed Balak how to trip up the people of Israel. He taught them to sin by eating food offered to idols and by committing sexual sin.

But what if the servant thinks,‘ My master won’t be back for a while,’ and he begins beating the other servants, partying, and getting drunk?The master will return unannounced and unexpected, and he will cut the servant in pieces and banish him with the unfaithful.

Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit,

Now, I will speak to the rest of you, though I do not have a direct command from the Lord. If a fellow believer has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to continue living with him, he must not leave her.

When he first arrived, he ate with the Gentile believers, who were not circumcised. But afterward, when some friends of James came, Peter wouldn’t eat with the Gentiles anymore. He was afraid of criticism from these people who insisted on the necessity of circumcision.
