O Lord, do not rebuke me in Your wrath, Nor chasten me in Your hot displeasure!For Your arrows pierce me deeply, And Your hand presses me down.There is no soundness in my flesh Because of Your anger, Nor any health in my bones Because of my sin.For my iniquities have gone over my head; Like a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.My wounds are foul and festering Because of my foolishness.I am troubled, I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.For my loins are full of inflammation, And there is no soundness in my flesh.I am feeble and severely broken; I groan because of the turmoil of my heart.

If they break My statutes And do not keep My commandments,Then I will punish their transgression with the rod, And their iniquity with stripes.Nevertheless My lovingkindness I will not utterly take from him, Nor allow My faithfulness to fail.My covenant I will not break, Nor alter the word that has gone out of My lips.

So the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died.Therefore the people came to Moses, and said,“ We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord that He take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.”So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.

Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—

and he cried out to the man of God who came from Judah, saying,“ Thus says the Lord:‘ Because you have disobeyed the word of the Lord, and have not kept the commandment which the Lord your God commanded you,but you came back, ate bread, and drank water in the place of which the Lord said to you,“ Eat no bread and drink no water,” your corpse shall not come to the tomb of your fathers.’”So it was, after he had eaten bread and after he had drunk, that he saddled the donkey for him, the prophet whom he had brought back.When he was gone, a lion met him on the road and killed him. And his corpse was thrown on the road, and the donkey stood by it. The lion also stood by the corpse.

“ You only have I known of all the families of the earth; Therefore I will punish you for all your iniquities.”

However, because by this deed you have given great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme, the child also who is born to you shall surely die.”Then Nathan departed to his house. And the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s wife bore to David, and it became ill.David therefore pleaded with God for the child, and David fasted and went in and lay all night on the ground.So the elders of his house arose and went to him, to raise him up from the ground. But he would not, nor did he eat food with them.Then on the seventh day it came to pass that the child died. And the servants of David were afraid to tell him that the child was dead. For they said,“ Indeed, while the child was alive, we spoke to him, and he would not heed our voice. How can we tell him that the child is dead? He may do some harm!”

And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:“ My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives.”If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons.Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness.Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
