所罗门在耶路撒冷的摩利亚山上动工兴建耶和华的殿，殿址在耶布斯人阿珥楠的麦场，就是大卫指定的地方。耶和华曾在那里向他父亲大卫显现。

殿前的门廊长九米，与殿的宽度一样，高九米，里面都贴上纯金。

所罗门在做以色列王的第四年二月，即西弗月，开始为耶和华建殿。那时正是以色列人离开埃及后第四百八十年。所罗门王为耶和华建造的殿长二十七米，宽九米，高十三米半。殿前的门廊和殿一样宽九米，深四米半。殿有精致的窗户。靠殿墙、围着外殿和内殿又造了三层厢房，底层宽二点二五米，中层宽二点七米，上层宽三点一米。厢房的横梁都搭在殿墙突出的地方，免得插入殿墙。建殿的石头都在采石场凿好了，建殿的时候听不到锤子、斧头或其他铁器的响声。

祭司亚撒利雅率领八十位耶和华勇敢的祭司跟着进殿，阻止乌西雅王，说：“乌西雅啊，给耶和华烧香不是你可以做的事，乃是承受圣职做祭司的亚伦子孙的事。离开圣所吧！你已干犯耶和华上帝，必不能从祂那里得荣耀。”手拿香炉要烧香的乌西雅大怒，正当他在耶和华殿里的香坛旁向众祭司发怒的时候，他额头上突然患了麻风病。亚撒利雅大祭司和众祭司见状，就催促他出殿，他急忙出去了，因为耶和华降灾给他。
