Then he said,“ Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

And Leah conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Reuben, for she said,“ Because the Lord has looked upon my affliction; for now my husband will love me.”She conceived again and bore a son, and said,“ Because the Lord has heard that I am hated, he has given me this son also.” And she called his name Simeon.Again she conceived and bore a son, and said,“ Now this time my husband will be attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore his name was called Levi.And she conceived again and bore a son, and said,“ This time I will praise the Lord.” Therefore she called his name Judah. Then she ceased bearing.

Unstable as water, you shall not have preeminence, because you went up to your father’s bed; then you defiled it— he went up to my couch!“ Simeon and Levi are brothers; weapons of violence are their swords.Let my soul come not into their council; O my glory, be not joined to their company. For they were not listed among the people of Israel, because there was no inheritance given to them among the people of Israel.These were those listed by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who listed the people of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.But among these there was not one of those listed by Moses and Aaron the priest, who had listed the people of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.For the Lord had said of them,“ They shall die in the wilderness.” Not one of them was left, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

And the sons of Beriah: Heber and Malchiel.These are the sons of Zilpah, whom Laban gave to Leah his daughter; and these she bore to Jacob— sixteen persons.The sons of Rachel, Jacob’s wife: Joseph and Benjamin.And to Joseph in the land of Egypt were born Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera the priest of On, bore to him.And the sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim, and Ard.These are the sons of Rachel, who were born to Jacob— fourteen persons in all.The son of Dan: Hushim.The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer, and Shillem.These are the sons of Bilhah, whom Laban gave to Rachel his daughter, and these she bore to Jacob— seven persons in all.All the persons belonging to Jacob who came into Egypt, who were his own descendants, not including Jacob’s sons’ wives, were sixty-six persons in all.And the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt, were two. All the persons of the house of Jacob who came into Egypt were seventy.

And these were their names: From the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;from the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh;from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun;from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;from the tribe of Joseph( that is, from the tribe of Manasseh), Gaddi the son of Susi;from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.

And as her soul was departing( for she was dying), she called his name Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin.

And Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son.Then Rachel said,“ God has judged me, and has also heard my voice and given me a son.” Therefore she called his name Dan.Rachel’s servant Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son.Then Rachel said,“ With mighty wrestlings I have wrestled with my sister and have prevailed.” So she called his name Naphtali.When Leah saw that she had ceased bearing children, she took her servant Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife.Then Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.And Leah said,“ Good fortune has come!” so she called his name Gad.Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son.And Leah said,“ Happy am I! For women have called me happy.” So she called his name Asher.In the days of wheat harvest Reuben went and found mandrakes in the field and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah,“ Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”But she said to her,“ Is it a small matter that you have taken away my husband? Would you take away my son’s mandrakes also?” Rachel said,“ Then he may lie with you tonight in exchange for your son’s mandrakes.”When Jacob came from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said,“ You must come in to me, for I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he lay with her that night.And God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son.Leah said,“ God has given me my wages because I gave my servant to my husband.” So she called his name Issachar.And Leah conceived again, and she bore Jacob a sixth son.Then Leah said,“ God has endowed me with a good endowment; now my husband will honor me, because I have borne him six sons.” So she called his name Zebulun.Afterward she bore a daughter and called her name Dinah.Then God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and opened her womb.She conceived and bore a son and said,“ God has taken away my reproach.”And she called his name Joseph, saying,“ May the Lord add to me another son!”
