Jesus Handed Over to Pilate
Judas Hangs Himself
Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders.27:3 Mt 21:29; 26:14–15
“I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said.
“What’s that to us?” they said. “See to it yourself!”
The chief priests took the silver and said, “It’s not permitted27:6 Mk 2:24; Jn 18:31 to put it into the temple treasury, since it is blood money.”
They conferred together and bought the potter’s field with it as a burial place for foreigners.
Therefore that field has been called “Field of Blood” to this day.
Then what was spoken through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled: They took27:9 Or I took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him whose price was set by the Israelites,
and they gave27:10 Some mss read I gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.27:9–10Jr 32:6–9; Zch 11:12–1327:9–10 Jr 32:6–9; Zch 11:12–13; Mt 1:22
Jesus Faces the Governor
Now Jesus stood before the governor.27:11–14 Mk 15:2–5; Lk 23:2–3; Jn 18:29–38 “Are you the king of the Jews?” the governor asked him.
Then Pilate said to him, “Don’t you hear how much they are testifying against you?”
Jesus or Barabbas
At the festival27:15–26 Mk 15:6–15; Lk 23:16–25; Jn 18:39–40; 19:16 the governor’s custom was to release to the crowd a prisoner they wanted.
At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Barabbas.27:16 Other mss read Jesus Barabbas, also in v. 17
So when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Who is it you want me to release for you — Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 27:17 Mt 1:16; 27:22
For he knew it was because of envy that they had handed him over.
The chief priests and the elders, however, persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to execute Jesus.
The governor asked them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?”
“Barabbas!” they answered.
Pilate asked them, “What should I do then with Jesus, who is called Christ?”
Then he said, “Why? What has he done wrong?”
When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, “I am innocent of this man’s blood.27:24 Other mss read this righteous man’s blood See to it yourselves!” 27:24 Dt 21:6–8; Ps 26:6; Mt 26:5; 27:4,19
Mocked by the Military
Then27:27–31 Mk 15:16–20; Jn 19:2–3 the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the governor’s residence and gathered the whole company27:27 Lit cohort around him.27:27 Jn 18:28,33; 19:9; Ac 10:1
They twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and placed a staff in his right hand. And they knelt down before him and mocked him: “Hail, king of the Jews!”
Then they spat on him, took the staff, and kept hitting him on the head.
Crucified Between Two Criminals
As they were going out, they found a Cyrenian man named Simon. They forced him to carry his cross.27:32 Nm 15:35; Mk 15:21; Lk 23:26; Heb 13:12
When they came to a place called Golgotha27:33–44 Mk 15:22–32; Lk 23:33–43; Jn 19:17–24 (which means Place of the Skull),
they gave him wine27:34 Other mss read sour wine mixed with gall to drink. But when he tasted it, he refused to drink it.
After crucifying him, they divided his clothes by casting lots.27:35 Other mss add that what was spoken by the prophet might be fulfilled: “They divided my clothes among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.”27:34–35 Ps 22:17; 69:21
Then they sat down and were guarding him there.
Above his head they put up the charge against him in writing: This Is Jesus, the King of the Jews.
Then two criminals27:38 Or revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on the right and one on the left.27:38 Is 53:12; Mt 20:21; Jn 18:40
Those who passed by were yelling insults at27:39 Lit passed by blasphemed, or were blaspheming him, shaking their heads27:39 Jb 16:4; Ps 22:7; 109:25; Lm 2:15; Mk 15:29
and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!” 27:40 Mt 4:3,6; 26:61,63; Jn 2:19
In the same way the chief priests, with the scribes and elders,27:41 Other mss add and Pharisees mocked him and said,
“He saved others, but he cannot save himself! He is the King of Israel!27:42 Jn 1:49; 12:13 Let him27:42 Other mss read If he ... Israel, let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him.
He trusts in God; let God rescue him now — if he takes pleasure in him!27:43 Or if he wants him For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’”
In the same way even the criminals who were crucified with him taunted him.27:43–44 Ps 22:8; Lk 23:39–43
The Death of Jesus
From noon until three in the afternoon,27:45 Lit From the sixth hour to the ninth hour darkness came over the whole land.27:45 Or whole earth27:45–56 Mk 15:33–41; Lk 23:44–49; Jn 19:28–30
When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling for Elijah.”
Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and offered him a drink.27:48 Ps 69:21; Mk 15:36; Lk 23:36; Jn 19:29
But the rest said, “Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit.27:50 Mk 15:37; Lk 23:46; Jn 10:18; 19:30
Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary27:51 Ex 26:31–33; 2Ch 3:14; Heb 9:3 was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, and the rocks were split.
The tombs were also opened27:52 Ezk 37:12 and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.
And they came out of the tombs after his resurrection, entered the holy city, and appeared to many.
The Burial of Jesus
When it was evening,27:57–61 Mk 15:42–47; Lk 23:50–56; Jn 19:38–42 a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph came, who himself had also become a disciple27:57 Mt 10:42; 28:19; Lk 14:26; Jn 8:31; 13:35; 15:8; Ac 6:1 of Jesus.
He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus’s body. Then Pilate ordered that it27:58 Other mss read that the body be released.
So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen,
and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock. He left after rolling a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.27:60 Is 53:9; Mt 27:66; 28:2; Mk 16:4
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were seated there, facing the tomb.
The Closely Guarded Tomb
The next day, which followed the preparation day, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate27:62 Mk 15:42; Lk 23:54; Jn 19:14,31,42
