The Lord’s Prayer

1He was praying11:1 Lk 3:21 in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John also taught his disciples.”11:1 Lk 5:33

Ask, Search, Knock

5He also said to them, “Suppose one of you11:5 Lit Who of you has a friend and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,

6because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I don’t have anything to offer him.’

7Then he will answer from inside and say, ‘Don’t bother me! The door is already locked, and my children and I have gone to bed. I can’t get up to give you anything.’

8I tell you, even though he won’t get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his friend’s shameless boldness,11:8 Or persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.11:8 Lk 18:1–6

9 “So 11:9–13 Mt 7:7–11; Jn 14:13–14; 15:7; 16:24 I say to you, ask,11:9 Mt 18:19; 21:22; Mk 11:24; Jms 1:5–6,17; 1Jn 3:22; 5:14–15 and it will be given to you. Seek,11:9 Dt 4:29; 1Ch 28:9; 2Ch 15:2; Pr 8:17; Is 55:6; Jr 29:13 and you will find. Knock,11:9 Lk 11:10; 12:36; 13:25; Ac 12:13,16; Rv 3:20 and the door will be opened to you.

10For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

11What father among you, if his son11:11 Other mss read son asks for bread, would give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish?

12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?

A House Divided

15But some of them said, “He drives out demons by Beelzebul,11:15 2Kg 1:2; Mt 10:25 the ruler11:15 Lk 12:58 of the demons.”11:15 Jn 12:31; 14:30; 16:11; Eph 2:2

16And others, as a test,11:16 Lk 10:25 were demanding of him a sign11:16 Jn 2:11; 8:6 from heaven.

17Knowing their thoughts,11:17 Lk 5:22; Php 2:6 he told them, “Every kingdom divided11:17 Dn 5:28; 11:4; Lk 12:52–53 against itself is headed for destruction, and a house divided against itself falls.

18If Satan11:18 Mt 4:1,10; Ac 13:10 also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom11:18 Lk 4:5 stand? For you say I drive out demons by Beelzebul.

19And if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons11:19 Gl 3:7; 1Pt 5:13 drive them out? For this reason they will be your judges.

20If I drive out demons by the finger of God,11:20 Ex 8:19; 31:18; Dt 9:10; Ps 8:3 then the kingdom of God11:20 Mt 19:24; 21:31,43; Lk 17:21 has come upon you.

21When a strong man, fully armed, guards his estate, his possessions are secure.

22But when one stronger than he attacks and overpowers11:22 Jn 16:33; 1Jn 2:13 him, he takes from him all his weapons11:22 Gk panoplia, the armor and weapons of a foot soldier; Eph 6:11,1311:22 Eph 6:11,13 he trusted11:22 Ac 26:28 in, and divides up his plunder.11:22 Is 49:24–26

An Unclean Spirit’s Return

24 “When 11:24–26 Mt 12:43–45 an unclean spirit11:24 Mk 1:23–27; Lk 8:29; 9:42; Rv 18:2 comes out of a person, it roams through waterless places looking for rest,11:24 Mt 11:29; Rv 4:8; 14:11 and not finding rest, it then11:24 Other mss omit then says, ‘I’ll go back to my house that I came from.’

25Returning, it finds the house swept and put in order.

26Then it goes and brings seven other spirits11:26 Lv 26:18–28; Dt 7:1; Pr 6:31; 26:25; Lk 8:2 more evil than itself, and they enter and settle down there. As a result, that person’s last condition is worse than the first.”11:26 Jn 5:14; 2Pt 2:20–22

True Blessedness

27As he was saying these things, a woman from the crowd11:27 Lk 12:3 raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the one who nursed you!” 11:27 Lk 1:48; 23:29

28He said, “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God11:28 Lk 5:1; 8:21; Ac 13:7 and keep it.”11:28 Lv 22:31; Jn 13:17; Jms 1:22; Rv 1:3; 22:7

The Sign of Jonah

29As the crowds were increasing, he began saying, “This generation11:29 Lk 7:31; 17:25; 21:32 is an evil generation.11:29–32 Mt 12:39–42; Mk 8:12 It demands a sign,11:29 Lk 11:16 but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.11:29 Other mss add the prophet11:29 Jnh 1:1–4:9; Mt 16:4

30For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so also the Son of Man11:30 Mk 2:10; Lk 5:24 will be to this generation.

31The queen of the south11:31 1Kg 10:1; 2Ch 9:1 will rise up at the judgment11:31 Lk 10:14 with the men of this generation and condemn11:31 Heb 11:7 them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon,11:31 1Kg 4:34; Pr 1:1 and look — something greater than Solomon is here.

32The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah’s preaching, and look — something greater than Jonah is here.

The Lamp of the Body

33 “No 11:33 Mt 5:15; Mk 4:21 one lights a lamp11:33 Lk 8:16 and puts it in the cellar or under a basket,11:33 Other mss omit or under a basket but on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see its light.

34Your eye is the lamp of the body.11:34–36 Mt 6:22–23 When your eye is healthy, your whole body is also full of light. But when it is bad,11:34 Jr 24:8; Mt 7:17 your body is also full of darkness.

35Take care, then, that the light in you is not darkness.

36If, therefore, your whole body is full of light, with no part of it in darkness, it will be entirely illuminated, as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

Religious Hypocrisy Denounced

37As he was speaking, a Pharisee11:37 Lk 7:36 asked him to dine with him. So he went in and reclined at the table.

38When the Pharisee saw this, he was amazed that he did not first perform the ritual washing11:38 Lit he did not first wash11:38 Heb 6:2 before dinner.11:38 Mt 15:2; Mk 7:2–5

39But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed11:39 Mt 23:25; Lk 12:20; 16:14; Heb 10:34 and evil.11:39 Mk 7:22

40Fools!11:40 Mt 23:17; Lk 12:20 Didn’t he who made the outside make the inside too?

46Then he said, “Woe also to you experts in the law! You load people with burdens11:46 Mt 23:4; Ac 27:10; Gl 6:5 that are hard to carry, and yet you yourselves don’t touch these burdens with one of your fingers.11:46 Mt 11:28–30; Ac 15:10

52 “Woe to you experts in the law! You have taken away the key to knowledge. 11:52 1Co 14:6 You didn’t go in yourselves, and you hindered11:52 1Co 14:39 those who were trying to go in.”
