The Way to the Father

1 “Don’t let your heart be troubled. 14:1 Jn 14:27 Believe14:1 Or You believe in God; 14:1 Ac 16:34; 27:25; Rm 4:3,17,24; Gl 3:6; Ti 3:8; Jms 2:23; 1Jn 5:10 believe also in me.

2In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going 14:2 Jn 8:21–22; 13:33,36; 16:7 to prepare a place for you?

3If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again14:3 Mk 8:38 and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also.14:3 Jn 12:26

5“Lord,” Thomas14:5 Mk 3:18 said, “we don’t know where you’re going. How can we know the way?”

Jesus Reveals the Father

8“Lord,” said Philip,14:8 Mk 3:18 “show us the Father, and that’s enough for us.”

9Jesus said to him, “Have I been among you all this time and you do not know me, Philip? The one who has seen me has seen the Father.14:9 Jn 5:19,37; 12:45 How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Another Counselor Promised

The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I am coming to you.

20On that day you will know that I am in my Father,14:20 Jn 14:10 you are in me, and I am in you.

23Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.14:23 Jn 14:2; 1Jn 2:24

24The one who doesn’t love me will not keep my words. The word that you hear is not mine but is from the Father who sent me.14:24 Jn 5:19; 7:16; 8:28; 12:49–50

25 “I have spoken these things to you while I remain with you.

Jesus’s Gift of Peace

27 “Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Don’t let your heart be troubled or fearful. 14:27 2Tm 1:7

28You have heard me tell you, ‘I am going away14:28 Jn 16:5 and I am coming to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father,14:28 Jn 16:10 because the Father is greater than I.14:28 Jn 10:29; 1Jn 3:20; 4:4

29I have told you now before it happens14:29 Jn 13:19; 16:4 so that when it does happen you may believe.

30I will not talk with you much longer, because the ruler of the world14:30 Mt 4:1; Jn 12:31 is coming. He has no power over me.14:30 Lit He has nothing in me14:30 Lk 4:6

31On the contrary, so that the world may know that I love the Father, I do as the Father commanded me.
