Greeting

1Paul,1:1 Ac 13:9 an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will,1:1 1Co 1:1; Eph 1:1; Col 1:1 for the sake of the promise of life1:1 1Jn 2:25; 5:12 in Christ Jesus:

2To Timothy, my dearly loved son.

Grace, mercy, and peace1:2 1Tm 1:2; 2Jn 3 from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Thanksgiving

3I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience1:3 Ac 23:1; 24:16; Rm 9:1; 2Co 1:12; 1Tm 1:19; 3:9; Heb 10:22; 1Pt 3:21 as my ancestors did, when I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day.1:3 Eph 1:6

4Remembering your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy.

5I recall your sincere faith1:5 1Tm 1:5 that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice1:5 Ac 16:1 and now, I am convinced, is in you also.

6Therefore, I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is in you through the laying on of my hands.1:6 1Tm 4:14; 5:22

7For God has not given us a spirit of fear,1:7 Jn 7:13; 14:27; Rm 8:15 but one of power,1:7 Or For the Spirit God gave us does not make us fearful, but gives us power1:7 Lk 1:35; 4:14; 24:49; Ac 1:8; 4:33; Rm 15:13,19; 1Co 2:4; Eph 3:16,20; 1Th 1:5 love,1:7 1Co 13:1 and sound judgment.

Not Ashamed of the Gospel

8So don’t be ashamed1:8 Mk 8:38; Rm 1:16; 2Tm 1:12,16 of the testimony about our Lord,1:8 Ac 4:33; 1Co 1:6; Rv 1:2,9; 12:17; 19:10; 20:4 or of me his prisoner.1:8 Eph 3:1; 4:1; Phm 1,9 Instead, share in suffering for the gospel, relying on the power1:8 Lk 1:35; 2Co 13:4 of God.

9He has saved us and called us with a holy calling,1:9 Rm 8:28; 11:14,29; Heb 3:1 not according to our works,1:9 Eph 2:9 but according to his own purpose1:9 Pr 19:21; Is 42:6; 46:10; Ac 2:23; 4:28; 26:16; Rm 8:28; 9:11; Eph 1:11; Php 2:13 and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.

10This has now been made evident through the appearing1:10 Lk 21:8; 2Tm 4:1; 1Jn 2:28 of our Savior Christ Jesus, who has abolished death1:10 Jn 8:51; Php 3:10 and has brought life1:10 1Jn 5:12 and immortality to light through the gospel.

11For this gospel I was appointed1:11 1Tm 2:7 a herald, apostle, and teacher,1:11 Other mss add of the Gentiles

Be Loyal to the Faith

13Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching1:13 1Tm 1:10; 6:3; Ti 1:9; 2:1 that you have heard from me,1:13 2Tm 2:2; 3:14 in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.

14Guard the good deposit through the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

15You know that all those in the province of Asia1:15 Ac 6:9; 16:6 have deserted me,1:15 2Tm 4:10–16 including Phygelus and Hermogenes.

16May the Lord grant mercy1:16 Lk 1:50 to the household of Onesiphorus,1:16 2Tm 4:19 because he often refreshed me1:16 Phm 7,20 and was not ashamed of my chains.1:16 Ac 16:26; 20:23; 21:33; 23:29; 26:29; Eph 6:20; Phm 10

17On the contrary, when he was in Rome,1:17 Rm 1:7 he diligently searched for me and found me.

18May the Lord grant that he obtain mercy1:18 Lk 1:50 from him on that day. You know very well how much he ministered at Ephesus.1:18 Eph 1:1
