Instructions about Head Coverings
Now I praise you11:2 Other mss add brothers, because you remember me in everything and hold fast to the traditions11:2 2Th 2:15; 3:6 just as I delivered11:2 Jd 3 them to you.
But I want you to know that Christ is the head11:3 Eph 1:22; 4:15; Col 1:18; 2:10,19 of every man, and the man is the head of the woman,11:3 Or the husband is the head of the wife11:3 Gn 3:16; Eph 5:23 and God is the head of Christ.11:3 1Co 3:23
Every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head, since that is one and the same as having her head shaved.11:5 Dt 21:11–12
For if a woman doesn’t cover her head, she should have her hair cut off. But if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her head be covered.
A man should not cover his head, because he is the image11:7 Gn 1:27 and glory of God.11:7 Mk 10:37; Lk 9:32; Jn 17:24; 2Co 3:18; 2Pt 3:18 So too, woman is the glory of man.
For man did not come from woman, but woman came from man.11:8 Gn 2:21–23; 1Tm 2:13
Neither was man created for the sake of woman, but woman for the sake of man.
This is why a woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
In the Lord, however, woman is not independent of man, and man is not independent of woman.
Judge11:13 Jn 5:22–30 for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
Does not even nature itself teach11:14 Mt 28:20; Ac 4:2; 2Tm 4:11 you that if a man has long hair it is a disgrace11:14 2Co 6:8 to him,
but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory?11:15 Php 3:19 For her hair is given to her11:15 Other mss omit to her as a covering.
If anyone wants to argue about this, we have no other11:16 Or no such custom, nor do the churches of God.
The Lord’s Supper
Now in giving this instruction I do not praise you, since you come together not for the better but for the worse.
For to begin with, I hear that when you come together as a church there are divisions among you, and in part I believe it.
Indeed, it is necessary that there be factions11:19 2Pt 2:1 among you, so that those who are approved may be recognized among you.
When you come together, then, it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper.11:20 Mt 26:26–29; Mk 14:22–25; Lk 22:14–20; 1Co 10:14–22
For at the meal, each one eats his own supper.11:21 Or eats his own supper ahead of others So one person is hungry while another gets drunk!
Don’t you have homes in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I do not praise you in this matter!
Self-Examination
So, then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sin against the body11:27 Lit be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
Let a person examine himself; in this way let him eat the bread and drink from the cup.
For whoever eats and drinks without recognizing the body,11:29 Other mss read drinks unworthily, not discerning the Lord’s body eats and drinks judgment11:29 Mk 12:40; 1Jn 5:16 on himself.
This is why many are sick and ill among you, and many have fallen asleep.11:30 Jn 11:11; Ac 7:60; 1Th 4:13–15
If we were properly judging ourselves, we would not be judged,
but when we are judged11:32 Jn 5:22–30 by the Lord, we are disciplined, so that we may not be condemned11:32 Mt 12:41; Jn 5:22 with the world.
Therefore, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, welcome one another.11:33 Or wait for one another
