  • Exodus 18:19 - Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the people’s representative before God and bring their disputes to him.
  • Exodus 18:20 - Teach them his decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave.
  • Exodus 18:21 - But select capable men from all the people—men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain—and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
  • Exodus 18:22 - Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you.
  • Exodus 18:23 - If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.”
  • Exodus 18:24 - Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said.
  • Exodus 18:25 - He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens.
  • Exodus 18:26 - They served as judges for the people at all times. The difficult cases they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves.
  • Exodus 18:27 - Then Moses sent his father-in-law on his way, and Jethro returned to his own country.
  • Job 29:7 - “When I went to the gate of the city and took my seat in the public square,

  • Job 29:15 - I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.
  • Job 29:16 - I was a father to the needy; I took up the case of the stranger.
  • Job 29:17 - I broke the fangs of the wicked and snatched the victims from their teeth.
  • Ezra 4:13 - Furthermore, the king should know that if this city is built and its walls are restored, no more taxes, tribute or duty will be paid, and eventually the royal revenues will suffer.
  • Ezra 6:8 - Moreover, I hereby decree what you are to do for these elders of the Jews in the construction of this house of God: Their expenses are to be fully paid out of the royal treasury, from the revenues of Trans-Euphrates, so that the work will not stop.
  • Luke 23:2 - And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Messiah, a king.”
  • Ezra 4:20 - Jerusalem has had powerful kings ruling over the whole of Trans-Euphrates, and taxes, tribute and duty were paid to them.

  • Matthew 17:24 - After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”
  • Matthew 17:25 - “Yes, he does,” he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. “What do you think, Simon?” he asked. “From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?”
  • Matthew 17:26 - “From others,” Peter answered. “Then the children are exempt,” Jesus said to him.
  • Matthew 17:27 - “But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours.”
  • Mark 12:14 - They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax to Caesar or not?
  • Mark 12:15 - Should we pay or shouldn’t we?” But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. “Why are you trying to trap me?” he asked. “Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.”
  • Mark 12:16 - They brought the coin, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?” “Caesar’s,” they replied.
  • Mark 12:17 - Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.” And they were amazed at him.
  • Luke 20:21 - So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.
  • Luke 20:22 - Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”
  • Luke 20:23 - He saw through their duplicity and said to them,
  • Luke 20:24 - “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?” “Caesar’s,” they replied.
  • Luke 20:25 - He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.”
  • Luke 20:26 - They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.
  • 1 Chronicles 18:14 - David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people.
