  • Matthew 23:17 - Blind fools! Which is more important—the gold or the Temple that makes the gold sacred?
  • Matthew 23:18 - And you say that to swear ‘by the altar’ is not binding, but to swear ‘by the gifts on the altar’ is binding.
  • Matthew 23:19 - How blind! For which is more important—the gift on the altar or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
  • Matthew 23:20 - When you swear ‘by the altar,’ you are swearing by it and by everything on it.
  • Matthew 23:21 - And when you swear ‘by the Temple,’ you are swearing by it and by God, who lives in it.
  • Matthew 23:22 - And when you swear ‘by heaven,’ you are swearing by the throne of God and by God, who sits on the throne.
  • Matthew 23:23 - “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are careful to tithe even the tiniest income from your herb gardens, but you ignore the more important aspects of the law—justice, mercy, and faith. You should tithe, yes, but do not neglect the more important things.
  • Matthew 23:24 - Blind guides! You strain your water so you won’t accidentally swallow a gnat, but you swallow a camel!
  • Matthew 23:25 - “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are so careful to clean the outside of the cup and the dish, but inside you are filthy—full of greed and self-indulgence!
  • Matthew 23:26 - You blind Pharisee! First wash the inside of the cup and the dish, and then the outside will become clean, too.
  • Matthew 23:27 - “What sorrow awaits you teachers of religious law and you Pharisees. Hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs—beautiful on the outside but filled on the inside with dead people’s bones and all sorts of impurity.
  • Matthew 23:28 - Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness.
  • Romans 1:22 - Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools.
  • Isaiah 8:20 - Look to God’s instructions and teachings! People who contradict his word are completely in the dark.
  • Luke 8:10 - He replied, “You are permitted to understand the secrets of the Kingdom of God. But I use parables to teach the others so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled: ‘When they look, they won’t really see. When they hear, they won’t understand.’
  • Ephesians 5:8 - For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!
  • 1 Corinthians 2:14 - But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.
  • 1 Corinthians 3:18 - Stop deceiving yourselves. If you think you are wise by this world’s standards, you need to become a fool to be truly wise.
  • 1 Corinthians 3:19 - For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.”
  • Isaiah 5:20 - What sorrow for those who say that evil is good and good is evil, that dark is light and light is dark, that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.
  • Isaiah 5:21 - What sorrow for those who are wise in their own eyes and think themselves so clever.
  • Ephesians 4:18 - Their minds are full of darkness; they wander far from the life God gives because they have closed their minds and hardened their hearts against him.
  • Proverbs 26:12 - There is more hope for fools than for people who think they are wise.
  • Matthew 6:22 - “Your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light.
  • Romans 2:17 - You who call yourselves Jews are relying on God’s law, and you boast about your special relationship with him.
  • Romans 2:18 - You know what he wants; you know what is right because you have been taught his law.
  • Romans 2:19 - You are convinced that you are a guide for the blind and a light for people who are lost in darkness.
  • Romans 2:20 - You think you can instruct the ignorant and teach children the ways of God. For you are certain that God’s law gives you complete knowledge and truth.
  • Romans 2:21 - Well then, if you teach others, why don’t you teach yourself? You tell others not to steal, but do you steal?
  • Romans 2:22 - You say it is wrong to commit adultery, but do you commit adultery? You condemn idolatry, but do you use items stolen from pagan temples?
  • Romans 2:23 - You are so proud of knowing the law, but you dishonor God by breaking it.
  • Isaiah 44:18 - Such stupidity and ignorance! Their eyes are closed, and they cannot see. Their minds are shut, and they cannot think.
  • Isaiah 44:19 - The person who made the idol never stops to reflect, “Why, it’s just a block of wood! I burned half of it for heat and used it to bake my bread and roast my meat. How can the rest of it be a god? Should I bow down to worship a piece of wood?”
  • Isaiah 44:20 - The poor, deluded fool feeds on ashes. He trusts something that can’t help him at all. Yet he cannot bring himself to ask, “Is this idol that I’m holding in my hand a lie?”
  • 1 John 2:11 - But anyone who hates a fellow believer is still living and walking in darkness. Such a person does not know the way to go, having been blinded by the darkness.
  • Jeremiah 4:22 - “My people are foolish and do not know me,” says the Lord. “They are stupid children who have no understanding. They are clever enough at doing wrong, but they have no idea how to do right!”
  • 1 Corinthians 1:18 - The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.
  • 1 Corinthians 1:19 - As the Scriptures say, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.”
  • 1 Corinthians 1:20 - So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish.
