2 Samuel 24:3 - But Joab replied to the king, “May the Lord your God let you live to see a hundred times as many people as there are now! But why, my lord the king, do you want to do this?”
2 Samuel 24:4 - But the king insisted that they take the census, so Joab and the commanders of the army went out to count the people of Israel.
2 Samuel 24:5 - First they crossed the Jordan and camped at Aroer, south of the town in the valley, in the direction of Gad. Then they went on to Jazer,
2 Samuel 24:6 - then to Gilead in the land of Tahtim-hodshi and to Dan-jaan and around to Sidon.
2 Samuel 24:7 - Then they came to the fortress of Tyre, and all the towns of the Hivites and Canaanites. Finally, they went south to Judah as far as Beersheba.
2 Samuel 24:8 - Having gone through the entire land for nine months and twenty days, they returned to Jerusalem.
2 Samuel 24:9 - Joab reported the number of people to the king. There were 800,000 capable warriors in Israel who could handle a sword, and 500,000 in Judah.
2 Samuel 24:10 - But after he had taken the census, David’s conscience began to bother him. And he said to the Lord, “I have sinned greatly by taking this census. Please forgive my guilt, Lord, for doing this foolish thing.”
2 Samuel 24:11 - The next morning the word of the Lord came to the prophet Gad, who was David’s seer. This was the message:
2 Samuel 24:12 - “Go and say to David, ‘This is what the Lord says: I will give you three choices. Choose one of these punishments, and I will inflict it on you.’”
2 Samuel 24:13 - So Gad came to David and asked him, “Will you choose three years of famine throughout your land, three months of fleeing from your enemies, or three days of severe plague throughout your land? Think this over and decide what answer I should give the Lord who sent me.”
2 Samuel 24:14 - “I’m in a desperate situation!” David replied to Gad. “But let us fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy is great. Do not let me fall into human hands.”
2 Samuel 24:15 - So the Lord sent a plague upon Israel that morning, and it lasted for three days. A total of 70,000 people died throughout the nation, from Dan in the north to Beersheba in the south.
Psalms 49:7 - Yet they cannot redeem themselves from death by paying a ransom to God.
Matthew 20:28 - For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
1 Peter 1:18 - For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value.
1 Peter 1:19 - It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.
Exodus 38:25 - The whole community of Israel gave 7,545 pounds of silver, as measured by the weight of the sanctuary shekel.
Exodus 38:26 - This silver came from the tax collected from each man registered in the census. (The tax is one beka, which is half a shekel, based on the sanctuary shekel.) The tax was collected from 603,550 men who had reached their twentieth birthday.
1 Chronicles 27:24 - Joab son of Zeruiah began the census but never finished it because the anger of God fell on Israel. The total number was never recorded in King David’s official records.
Numbers 31:50 - So we are presenting the items of gold we captured as an offering to the Lord from our share of the plunder—armbands, bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces. This will purify our lives before the Lord and make us right with him. ”
