  • 1 Kings 17:12 - But she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I have no bread, only a handful of flour in the bowl and a little oil in the jar. See, I am gathering a few sticks so that I may go in and bake it for me and my son, that we may eat it [as our last meal] and die.”
  • Genesis 4:11 - And now you are cursed from the ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s [shed] blood from your hand.
  • Genesis 4:12 - When you cultivate the ground, it shall no longer yield its strength [it will resist producing good crops] for you; you shall be a fugitive and a vagabond [roaming aimlessly] on the earth [in perpetual exile without a home, a degraded outcast].”

  • Lamentations 4:5 - Those who feasted on delicacies Are perishing in the streets; Those reared in purple [as nobles] Embrace ash heaps.
  • Lamentations 4:6 - For the [punishment of the] wickedness of the daughter of my people [Jerusalem] Is greater than the [punishment for the] sin of Sodom, Which was overthrown in a moment, And no hands were turned toward her [to offer help].
  • Lamentations 4:7 - Her princes were purer than snow, They were whiter than milk [in appearance]; They were more ruddy in body than rubies, Their polishing was like lapis lazuli (sapphire).
  • Lamentations 4:8 - Their appearance is [now] blacker than soot [because of the prolonged famine]; They are not recognized in the streets; Their skin clings to their bones; It is withered, and it has become [dry] like wood.
  • Lamentations 4:9 - Those killed with the sword Are more fortunate than those killed with hunger; For the hungry pine and ebb away, For the lack of the fruits of the field.
  • Lamentations 4:10 - The hands of compassionate women Boiled their own children; They became food for them Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people [Judah].
  • Lamentations 4:11 - The Lord has fulfilled His wrath; He has poured out His fierce anger And has kindled a fire in Zion That has consumed her foundations.
  • Lamentations 4:12 - The kings of the earth did not believe, Nor did any of the inhabitants of the earth, That the adversary (oppressor) and enemy Could enter the gates of Jerusalem.
  • Lamentations 4:13 - Because of the sins of her [counterfeit] prophets And the wickedness of her [unfaithful] priests, Who have shed in her midst The blood of the just and righteous;
  • 1 Kings 17:1 - Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord, the God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall be neither dew nor rain these years, except by my word.”
  • Jeremiah 26:6 - then I will make this house [the temple] like Shiloh, and I will make this city [subject to] the curse of all nations of the earth [because it will be so vile in their sight].” ’ ”
  • Lamentations 1:1 - How solitary and lonely sits the city [Jerusalem] That was [once] full of people! How like a widow she has become. She who was great among the nations! The princess among the provinces, Has become a forced laborer!
  • Genesis 3:17 - Then to Adam the Lord God said, “Because you have listened [attentively] to the voice of your wife, and have eaten [fruit] from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it’; The ground is [now] under a curse because of you; In sorrow and toil you shall eat [the fruit] of it All the days of your life.
  • Genesis 3:18 - Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you shall eat the plants of the field.
  • Jeremiah 9:11 - I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, A haunt and dwelling place of jackals; And I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.”
  • Deuteronomy 28:55 - so that he will not give even one of them any of the flesh of his children which he will eat, because he has nothing else left, during the siege and the misery by which your enemy will oppress you in all your cities.
  • Lamentations 5:10 - Our skin is as hot as [the heat of] an oven Because of the burning heat of [the fever of] famine.
  • Genesis 8:21 - The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma [a soothing, satisfying scent] and the Lord said to Himself, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intent (strong inclination, desire) of man’s heart is wicked from his youth; and I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.

  • Genesis 5:29 - He named him Noah, saying, “This one shall bring us rest and comfort from our work and from the [dreadful] toil of our hands because of the ground which the Lord cursed.”
  • Isaiah 43:28 - So I will profane the officials of the sanctuary, And I will consign Jacob to destruction and [I will subject] Israel to defamation and abuse.
  • Amos 4:6 - “I also gave you cleanness of teeth [because of the famine] in all your cities And lack of bread in all your places, Yet you have not returned to Me [in repentance],” says the Lord.
  • Amos 4:7 - “Furthermore, I withheld the rain from you When there were still three months until the harvest. Then I would send rain on one city, And on another city I would not send rain; One piece of ground was rained on, While the part not rained on would dry up.
  • Amos 4:8 - So [the people of] two or three cities would stagger into one city to drink water, But would not be satisfied; Yet you have not returned to Me [in repentance],” says the Lord.
  • Amos 4:9 - “I wounded you with blight [from the hot, blasting east wind] and with mildew; And the caterpillar devoured Your many gardens and vineyards, your fig trees and your olive trees; Yet you have not returned to Me [in repentance],” says the Lord.
  • Deuteronomy 28:3 - “You will be blessed in the city, and you will be blessed in the field.
  • Deuteronomy 28:4 - “The offspring of your body and the produce of your ground and the offspring of your animals, the offspring of your herd and the young of your flock will be blessed.
  • Deuteronomy 28:5 - “Your basket and your kneading bowl will be blessed.
  • Deuteronomy 28:6 - “You will be blessed when you come in and you will be blessed when you go out.
  • Deuteronomy 28:7 - “The Lord will cause the enemies who rise up against you to be defeated before you; they will come out against you one way, but flee before you seven ways.
  • Deuteronomy 28:8 - The Lord will command the blessing upon you in your storehouses and in all that you undertake, and He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
  • Deuteronomy 28:9 - The Lord will establish you as a people holy [and set apart] to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk [that is, live your life each and every day] in His ways.
  • Deuteronomy 28:10 - So all the peoples of the earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will be afraid of you.
  • Deuteronomy 28:11 - The Lord will give you great prosperity, in the offspring of your body and in the offspring of your livestock and the produce of your ground, in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give you.
  • Deuteronomy 28:12 - The Lord will open for you His good treasure house, the heavens, to give rain to your land in its season and to bless all the work of your hand; and you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow.
  • Deuteronomy 28:13 - The Lord will make you the head (leader) and not the tail (follower); and you will be above only, and you will not be beneath, if you listen and pay attention to the commandments of the Lord your God, which I am commanding you today, to observe them carefully.
  • Deuteronomy 28:14 - Do not turn aside from any of the words which I am commanding you today, to the right or to the left, to follow and serve other gods.
  • Joel 1:4 - What the gnawing locust has left, the swarming locust has eaten; And what the swarming locust has left, the creeping locust has eaten; And what the creeping locust has left, the stripping locust has eaten [in judgment of Judah].
  • Jeremiah 14:18 - If I go out into the field, Then I gaze on those slaughtered with the sword! And if I enter the city, Then I gaze on [those tormented with] the diseases of famine! For both prophet and priest [who should have guided the people] Go about [bewildered and exiled] in a land (Babylon) that they do not know or understand.’ ”

  • Joel 1:12 - The vine dries up And the fig tree fails; The pomegranate, the palm also, and the apple tree, All the trees of the field dry up, Indeed, joy dries up and withdraws From the sons of men.
  • Joel 1:13 - Clothe yourselves with sackcloth And lament (cry out in grief), O priests; Wail, O ministers of the altar! Come, spend the night in sackcloth [and pray without ceasing], O ministers of my God, For the grain offering and the drink offering Are withheld from the house of your God.
  • Joel 1:14 - Consecrate a fast, Proclaim a solemn assembly, Gather the elders And all the inhabitants of the land To the house of the Lord your God, And cry out to the Lord [in penitent pleadings].
  • Joel 1:15 - Alas for the day! For the [judgment] day of the Lord is at hand, And it will come [upon the nation] as a destruction from the Almighty.
  • Joel 1:16 - Has not the food been cut off before our eyes, Joy and gladness from the house of our God?
  • Joel 1:17 - The seeds [of grain] shrivel under the clods, The storehouses are desolate and empty, The barns are in ruins Because the grain is dried up.
  • Joel 1:18 - How the animals groan! The herds of cattle are bewildered and wander aimlessly Because they have no pasture; Even the flocks of sheep suffer.
  • Malachi 4:6 - He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers [a reconciliation produced by repentance], so that I will not come and strike the land with a curse [of complete destruction].”
  • Haggai 1:9 - “You look for much [harvest], but it comes to little; and even when you bring that home, I blow it away. Why?” says the Lord of hosts. “Because of My house, which lies in ruins while each of you runs to his own house [eager to enjoy it].
  • Haggai 1:10 - Therefore, because of you [that is, your sin and disobedience] the heavens withhold the dew and the earth withholds its produce.
  • Haggai 1:11 - I called for a drought on the land and the hill country, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on what the ground produces, on men, on cattle, and on all the labor of your hands.”
  • Lamentations 2:11 - My eyes fail because of tears [mourns Jeremiah], My spirit is deeply disturbed; My heart is poured out on the earth [in grief] Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people [Jerusalem], When little ones and infants faint In the streets of the city.
  • Lamentations 2:12 - They cry to their mothers, “Where is grain and wine?” As they faint like a wounded man In the streets of the city, As their life [slips away and] is poured out In their mothers’ arms.
  • Lamentations 2:13 - How shall I console you? To what shall I compare you, O Daughter of Jerusalem? With what shall I compare you, so that I may comfort you, O Virgin Daughter of Zion? For your ruin is as vast as the sea; Who can heal you?
  • Lamentations 2:14 - Your prophets have seen (imagined) for you False and foolish visions; And they have not exposed your wickedness To restore you from captivity [by teaching you to repent], But they have seen (imagined) and declared to you false and misleading oracles.
  • Lamentations 2:15 - All who pass along the way Clap their hands in derision at you; They scoff and shake their heads At the Daughter of Jerusalem, saying, “Is this the city that was called ‘The perfection of beauty, The joy of all the earth’?”
  • Lamentations 2:16 - All your enemies Have opened their mouths wide against you; They [scornfully] hiss and gnash their teeth. They say, “We have swallowed her up! Certainly this is the day for which we waited; We have reached it, we have seen it!”
  • Lamentations 2:17 - The Lord has done what He planned; He has accomplished His word Which He commanded from days of old. He has demolished without sparing, And He has caused the enemy to rejoice over you; He has exalted the power of your enemies.
  • Lamentations 2:18 - Their hearts cried out to the Lord. “O wall of the Daughter of Zion, Let your tears run down like a river day and night; Give yourself no relief, Let your eyes have no rest.
  • Lamentations 2:19 - Arise, cry aloud in the night, At the beginning of the night watches; Pour out your heart like water Before the presence of the Lord; Lift up your hands to Him For the life of your little ones Who are faint from hunger At the head of every street.”
  • Lamentations 2:20 - See, O Lord, and look! With whom have You dealt this way? Should women eat their offspring, The little ones who were born healthy and beautiful? Should priest and prophet be killed In the sanctuary of the Lord?
  • Lamentations 2:21 - The young and the old Lie on the ground in the streets; My virgins and my young men Have fallen by the sword. You have killed them in the day of Your anger, You have slaughtered, not sparing.
  • Lamentations 2:22 - You [Lord] called as in the day of an appointed feast My terrors (dangers) on every side; And there was no one who escaped or survived In the day of the Lord’s anger. Those I have cared for and brought up with tenderness, My enemy annihilated them.
  • Proverbs 3:33 - The curse of the Lord is on the house of the wicked, But He blesses the home of the just and righteous.
  • Jeremiah 44:22 - The Lord could no longer endure it, because of the evil of your acts and the repulsive acts which you have committed; because of them your land has become a ruin, an object of horror and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day.
  • Isaiah 24:6 - Therefore, a curse devours the earth, and those who live on it suffer the punishment of their guilt. Therefore, the inhabitants of the earth are burned [under the curse of God’s wrath], and few people are left.
  • Isaiah 24:7 - The new wine mourns, The vine decays; All the merry-hearted sigh and groan.
  • Isaiah 24:8 - The mirth of the timbrels (tambourines) ceases, The noise of those who rejoice ends, The joy of the harp ceases.

  • Isaiah 24:10 - The city of chaos is broken down; Every house is shut up so that no one may enter.

  • Isaiah 24:12 - Horrible desolation is left in the city, And the gate is battered into ruins.
  • Malachi 3:9 - You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, this whole nation!
  • Malachi 3:10 - Bring all the tithes (the tenth) into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this,” says the Lord of hosts, “if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you [so great] a blessing until there is no more room to receive it.
  • Malachi 3:11 - Then I will rebuke the devourer (insects, plague) for your sake and he will not destroy the fruits of the ground, nor will your vine in the field drop its grapes [before harvest],” says the Lord of hosts.
  • Malachi 3:12 - “All nations shall call you happy and blessed, for you shall be a land of delight,” says the Lord of hosts.
  • Jeremiah 14:2 - “Judah mourns And her gates languish; Her people sit on the ground in mourning clothes And the cry of Jerusalem has gone up.
  • Jeremiah 14:3 - Their nobles have sent their servants for water; They have come to the cisterns and found no water. They have returned with empty vessels; They have been shamed and humiliated, And they cover their heads.
  • Jeremiah 14:4 - The ground is cracked Because there has been no rain on the land; The farmers are distressed, And they have covered their heads [in shame].
  • Jeremiah 14:5 - The doe in the field has given birth only to abandon her young Because there is no grass.
  • Joel 2:3 - Before them a fire devours, And behind them a flame burns; Before them the land is like the Garden of Eden, But behind them a desolate wilderness; And nothing at all escapes them.
  • Malachi 2:2 - If you do not listen, and if you do not take it to heart to honor My name,” says the Lord of hosts, “then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings [on the people]. Indeed, I have cursed them already, because you are not taking it to heart.
