He smashed the sex-and-religion shrine that had been set up just to the left of the city gate for the private use of Joshua, the city mayor. Even though these sex-and-religion priests did not defile the Altar in The Temple itself, they were part of the general priestly corruption and had to go.

1 Chroniques 24:4 - On constata que les chefs étaient plus nombreux parmi les descendants d’Eléazar que parmi ceux d’Itamar. C’est pourquoi les descendants d’Eléazar furent répartis en seize chefs de groupe familial et ceux d’Itamar en huit chefs de groupe familial.
1 Chroniques 24:5 - La répartition des uns et des autres se fit par tirage au sort car il y avait des responsables du lieu saint et des responsables du service de Dieu, aussi bien parmi les descendants d’Eléazar que parmi ceux d’Itamar.
1 Chroniques 24:6 - Le secrétaire Shemaya, fils de Netanéel de la tribu de Lévi, les inscrivit en présence du roi, des chefs, du prêtre Tsadoq, d’Ahimélek, fils d’Abiatar, et des chefs des groupes familiaux des prêtres et des lévites. On prenait alternativement un groupe familial pour Eléazar et un autre pour Itamar.

1 Chroniques 24:19 - C’est selon cet ordre que les groupes prenaient leur service pour entrer dans le temple de l’Eternel, ils y accomplissaient leur tâche conformément à la règle établie par leur ancêtre Aaron, selon ce que lui avait ordonné l’Eternel, le Dieu d’Israël.
1 Rois 18:19 - Maintenant, convoque tout Israël en ma présence sur le mont Carmel . Tu y rassembleras aussi les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal et les quatre cents prophètes de la déesse Ashéra qui sont tous entretenus par la reine Jézabel.

2 Rois 22:4 - Va trouver le grand-prêtre Hilqiya et demande-lui de compter tout l’argent qui a été apporté dans le temple de l’Eternel et que les portiers ont recueilli.

2 Chroniques 34:4 - On démolit en sa présence les autels des Baals. On abattit les autels à parfums placés sur ces autels. Il coupa les pieux sacrés d’Ashéra, brisa les idoles sculptées ou fondues et les réduisit en poussière qu’il dispersa sur les tombes de ceux qui avaient offert des sacrifices à ces faux dieux.

2 Rois 21:7 - Il fit dresser dans le Temple la statue d’Ashéra qu’il avait fabriquée, alors que l’Eternel avait déclaré à David et à son fils Salomon : C’est dans ce temple et dans Jérusalem, que j’ai choisie parmi toutes les tribus d’Israël, que j’établirai pour toujours ma présence .
