But Ebed-Melek, a Cushite, an official in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,

Ebed- Melek was an official in the royal palace. He was from the land of Cush. He heard that Jeremiah had been put into the well. The king was sitting by the Benjamin Gate at that time.

( This was after King Jeconiah and the queen mother, the high officials, the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the metalworkers had departed from Jerusalem.)

While he was at the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah the son of Hananiah was there; and he arrested Jeremiah the prophet, saying,“ You are deserting to the Chaldeans!”

They hate him who rebukes in the gate, And they despise him who speaks with integrity.

then his father and mother shall seize him, and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gateway of his hometown.

Messengers will come from Egypt; Cush will quickly stretch out her hands to God.

So the last shall be first, and the first, last.”

Jesus replied and said,“ A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he encountered robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead.And by coincidence a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.But a Samaritan who was on a journey came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion,and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said,‘ Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return, I will repay you.’Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?”

“ Go and speak to Ebed melech the Ethiopian, saying,‘ This is what the Lord of armies, the God of Israel says:“ Behold, I am going to bring My words on this city for disaster and not for prosperity; and they will take place before you on that day.But I will save you on that day,” declares the Lord,“ and you will not be handed over to the men of whom you are afraid.For I will assuredly rescue you, and you will not fall by the sword; but you will have your own life as plunder, because you have trusted in Me,” declares the Lord.’ ”

So he led Jehoiachin into exile to Babylon; also the king’s mother, the king’s wives, and his officials and the leading men of the land, he led into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon.

Can the Ethiopian change his skin, Or the leopard his spots? Then you as well can do good Who are accustomed to doing evil.

So he got ready and went; and there was an Ethiopian eunuch, a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure; and he had come to Jerusalem to worship,and he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading Isaiah the prophet.Then the Spirit said to Philip,“ Go up and join this chariot.”Philip ran up and heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said,“ Do you understand what you are reading?”And he said,“ Well, how could I, unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.Now the passage of Scripture which he was reading was this:“ He was led like a sheep to slaughter; And like a lamb that is silent before its shearer, So He does not open His mouth.In humiliation His justice was taken away; Who will describe His generation? For His life is taken away from the earth.”The eunuch answered Philip and said,“ Please tell me, of whom does the prophet say this? Of himself, or of someone else?”Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning from this Scripture he preached Jesus to him.As they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch* said,“ Look! Water! What prevents me from being baptized?”

And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven;but the sons of the kingdom will be thrown out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

the officials of Judah and the officials of Jerusalem, the high officials and the priests, and all the people of the land who passed between the parts of the calf—

And they will come from east and west, and from north and south, and will recline at the table in the kingdom of God.And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

When I went out to the gate of the city, When I took my seat in the public square,The young men saw me and hid themselves, And the old men arose and stood.The leaders stopped talking And put their hands on their mouths;The voices of the prominent people were hushed, And their tongues stuck to their palates.For when an ear heard, it called me blessed, And when an eye saw, it testified in support of me,Because I saved the poor who cried for help, And the orphan who had no helper.The blessing of the one who was about to perish came upon me, And I made the widow’s heart sing for joy.I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; My justice was like a robe and a headband.I was eyes to those who were blind, And feet to those who could not walk.I was a father to the poor, And I investigated the case which I did not know.I broke the jaws of the wicked And rescued the prey from his teeth.
