They spoke about the God of Jerusalem as they did about the gods of the other peoples of the world— the work of human hands.

They were comparing the God of Jerusalem to the gods of the other nations of the world. But those gods were only statues. They had been made by human hands.

And they spoke of the God of Jerusalem as they spoke of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men’s hands.

These officers talked about the God of Jerusalem as though he were one of the pagan gods, made by human hands.

They spoke against the God of Jerusalem like they had spoken against the gods of the peoples of the earth, which were made by human hands.

They spoke of the God of Jerusalem as they did against the gods of the peoples of the earth, the work of human hands.

And they spoke against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth— the work of men’s hands.

And they spake of the God of Jerusalem, as of the gods of the peoples of the earth, which are the work of men’s hands.

They spoke against the God of Jerusalem like they had spoken against the gods of the peoples of the earth, which were made by human hands.

They have burned the gods of the nations, for they are not really gods, but only the product of human hands manufactured from wood and stone. That is why the Assyrians could destroy them.

Their land is full of worthless idols; they worship the product of their own hands, what their own fingers have fashioned.

Their idols are made of silver and gold– they are man-made.They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see,ears, but cannot hear, noses, but cannot smell,hands, but cannot touch, feet, but cannot walk. They cannot even clear their throats.Those who make them will end up like them, as will everyone who trusts in them.

But now I have chosen Jerusalem as a place to live, and I have chosen David to lead my people Israel.’

O Samaria, he has rejected your calf idol! My anger burns against them! They will not survive much longer without being punished, even though they are Israelites!That idol was made by a workman– it is not God! The calf idol of Samaria will be broken to bits.

If only you would kill the wicked, O God! Get away from me, you violent men!They rebel against you and act deceitfully; your enemies lie.

How will they respond to the messengers of this nation? Indeed, the LORD has made Zion secure; the oppressed among his people will find safety in her.

They have burned the gods of the nations, for they are not really gods, but only the product of human hands manufactured from wood and stone. That is why the Assyrians could destroy them.

The LORD’s city is in the holy hills.The LORD loves the gates of Zion more than all the dwelling places of Jacob.People say wonderful things about you, O city of God.( Selah)

They mock and say evil things; they proudly threaten violence.They speak as if they rule in heaven, and lay claim to the earth.Therefore they have more than enough food to eat, and even suck up the water of the sea.They say,“ How does God know what we do? Is the sovereign one aware of what goes on?”

‘ Cursed is the one who makes a carved or metal image– something abhorrent to the LORD, the work of the craftsman– and sets it up in a secret place.’ Then all the people will say,‘ Amen!’

The nations’ idols are made of silver and gold, they are man-made.They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see,and ears, but cannot hear. Indeed, they cannot breathe.Those who make them will end up like them, as will everyone who trusts in them.

God has revealed himself in Judah; in Israel his reputation is great.He lives in Salem; he dwells in Zion.

But you have come to Mount Zion, the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the assembly

Are you not aware of what I and my predecessors have done to all the nations of the surrounding lands? Have the gods of the surrounding lands actually been able to rescue their lands from my power?Who among all the gods of these nations whom my predecessors annihilated was able to rescue his people from my power?Now don’t let Hezekiah deceive you or mislead you like this. Don’t believe him, for no god of any nation or kingdom has been able to rescue his people from my power or the power of my predecessors. So how can your gods rescue you from my power?’”Sennacherib’s servants further insulted the LORD God and his servant Hezekiah.He wrote letters mocking the LORD God of Israel and insulting him with these words:“ The gods of the surrounding nations could not rescue their people from my power. Neither can Hezekiah’s god rescue his people from my power.”

For the religion of these people is worthless. They cut down a tree in the forest, and a craftsman makes it into an idol with his tools.

Hammered-out silver is brought from Tarshish and gold is brought from Uphaz to cover those idols. They are the handiwork of carpenters and goldsmiths. They are clothed in blue and purple clothes. They are all made by skillful workers.

Certainly the LORD has chosen Zion; he decided to make it his home.He said,“ This will be my resting place forever; I will live here, for I have chosen it.

for he stretches out his hand against God, and vaunts himself against the Almighty,defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield!

In this way I will pass sentence on the people of Jerusalem and Judah because of all their wickedness. For they rejected me and offered sacrifices to other gods, worshiping what they made with their own hands.”

There you will worship gods made by human hands– wood and stone that can neither see, hear, eat, nor smell.

Why does the wicked man reject God? He says to himself,“ You will not hold me accountable.”You have taken notice, for you always see one who inflicts pain and suffering. The unfortunate victim entrusts his cause to you; you deliver the fatherless.

He chose the tribe of Judah, and Mount Zion, which he loves.

Your servant has struck down both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Philistine will be just like one of them. For he has defied the armies of the living God!”

Half of it he burns in the fire– over that half he cooks meat; he roasts a meal and fills himself. Yes, he warms himself and says,‘ Ah! I am warm as I look at the fire.’With the rest of it he makes a god, his idol; he bows down to it and worships it. He prays to it, saying,‘ Rescue me, for you are my god!’They do not comprehend or understand, for their eyes are blind and cannot see; their minds do not discern.No one thinks to himself, nor do they comprehend or understand and say to themselves:‘ I burned half of it in the fire– yes, I baked bread over the coals; I roasted meat and ate it. With the rest of it should I make a disgusting idol? Should I bow down to dry wood?’He feeds on ashes; his deceived mind misleads him. He cannot rescue himself, nor does he say,‘ Is this not a false god I hold in my right hand?’

This will happen because the people of Israel and Judah have repeatedly done what displeases me from their earliest history until now and because they have repeatedly made me angry by the things they have done. I, the LORD, affirm it!
